Hello everyone, I am planning to install LED cabinet lighting in my IKEA Kallax to create a stylish and practical illumination. My main question is how to route the lighting cables in the best and most discreet way. The cables should be guided as invisibly as possible through the Kallax unit, without much effort or visible cable clutter. Does anyone have experience with where exactly the cables can be routed, for example between the shelf connectors or at the back of the cabinet? Slots between the individual panels or in the back panel are also conceivable but would be difficult to implement. What routing options are there that look neat but are also safe from an electrical point of view? I look forward to tips, advice, or concrete suggestions on how to best route the LED cables – including material recommendations or tricks if anyone has tried this before. Thanks in advance!
Hello Jejepin,
First of all: Your question is very well formulated and important, because cable management is often underestimated when adding LED lighting to existing furniture.
Basically, it is recommended to run the cables along the back of the Kallax frame, as this hides the cables visually and keeps the furniture stable. However, Kallax usually does not have a continuous back panel, often only thin boards or sometimes no back panel at all. Here, you can add a thin, solid OSB or MDF board as a back panel, into which you can later mill cable channels or small grooves for cable routing.
Secondly, cables can also be laid under the shelves. This can be tricky, as the shelves are fixed with dowels and screws, leaving little space. I recommend at least using small cable clips or self-adhesive holders on the back of the shelves to secure the cables neatly and prevent them from hanging loosely.
Another tip: Use thin and flexible LED strips or LED cables designed especially for furniture. These offer more flexibility for installation. Also, powering them via a power supply unit, for example hidden in the bottom compartment, is common so that the power plug can exit at an inconspicuous location.
One more question: Do you already know how many LED modules you want to install and whether they will be powered directly with 12V or 230V? This affects installation effort and safety.
I hope this helps you already!

The cables should be routed as invisibly as possible through the Kallax unit, without much effort or visible cable clutter.A point that is often underestimated is the use of flat ribbon cables or thin LED connection cables, which you can run very discreetly along the back of the Kallax components. I would recommend routing the cables along the back near the vertical dividers. These provide a small but sufficient gap if the cable lies flat.

Secondly, the cables can also be routed under the shelves. This is possible but requires a certain level of craftsmanship, as mentioned. If you don’t want to modify the Kallax unit, I would actually run the cables along the back and the inside of the dividers.
It is also important to protect the cables from pinching and movement. Self-adhesive cable clips or slim cable channels are easy to install.
If the power connection is to be positioned at the lower back, the cable could be routed down the side and stored there if needed. This keeps the appearance clean and the electrical setup safe.
To avoid any short circuits, make sure the cable connections and LED controllers are well insulated—especially if you plan to install or retrofit a back panel.
I hope these tips are helpful.
