Hello everyone,

I have a white KALLAX shelving unit that I bought at IKEA a few years ago. Lately, I’ve noticed that the white surface is gradually turning grayish, especially on the areas I often touch or wipe. It looks like the color is becoming dull and discolored, but it’s less like typical yellowing and more like a kind of gray film.

I clean the unit regularly with mild dish soap and a microfiber cloth, but this hasn’t really helped. Before resorting to harsh cleaning agents, I wanted to ask here if anyone has tips or experience on how to restore a white KALLAX shelving unit that has become gray over time, specifically with this typical IKEA particleboard covered with a melamine surface.

Are there any effective home remedies or special products that can remove the gray tint without damaging or etching the surface? I would really appreciate any expert advice, thanks!

Hello soantoine,

your description sounds typical for light surface contamination that can accumulate over the years on melamine-coated furniture. The grayish patina usually forms from grease, dirt, and sometimes fine dust that settles.

Common household remedies that often help:

- A vinegar-water mixture (1 part vinegar, 3 parts water) can dissolve limescale residues and light deposits. Test first on an inconspicuous area.

- Mix baking soda with water into a paste and gently rub it in with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid scrubbing too hard to prevent damaging the surface.

- Alcohol or rubbing alcohol on a cloth can remove stubborn grease stains.

Commercial products, such as special melamine cleaners, are an alternative, but be cautious with strong solvents that can dull the finish.

Regular cleaning with mild detergents and always wiping off with clear water is recommended. Overly aggressive cleaning can damage the surface.

What I would not recommend are abrasive cleaners or steel wool, as they can scratch the surface and worsen the grayish tint.

I hope this helps!

In addition to Ianlau’s response:

The grayish tint on KALLAX shelves is caused by a combination of fine dirt particles and oxidation. The material is melamine-coated, which is generally easy to maintain, but over time it can develop discoloration or gray streaks due to environmental factors and frequent rubbing.

I recommend a systematic cleaning process as follows:

1. Wipe off loose dust and dirt with a dry microfiber cloth.
2. Use a solution of mild dish soap and warm water to thoroughly wash the surface.
3. To specifically remove the gray discoloration, apply a baking soda paste, let it sit for a few minutes, then gently rub it off.
4. Rinse and wipe dry with a clean cloth.

If stubborn stains persist, a plastic cleaner or a specialized melamine cleaning product may be used. It is essential to carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions and test the product first on a small, inconspicuous area.

Important: Do not use harsh or abrasive cleaners, as these can permanently damage the melamine coating.

In general, it is recommended to regularly care for KALLAX units made of melamine-coated particleboard to protect the surface from deposits.

That’s brilliant! 🙂

I also had a grey KALLAX and thought it had to go. But after cleaning it thoroughly with baking powder and warm water, it looked almost like new!

What I also enjoyed: sometimes a soft plastic eraser works really well on small stains to gently remove discoloration.

So: don’t give up right away, a little patience and the right methods work wonders. Good luck!

I would like to add a small warning here: although vinegar is a good household cleaner, its acidity can damage melamine coatings if used frequently or in higher concentrations, causing long-lasting discoloration.

Therefore, vinegar should only be used very diluted and sparingly. Alternatively, specially formulated melamine-safe cleaners are a safer choice.

This tip works well for small, isolated stains but is not practical for larger areas.

In general, the rule is to work carefully and with as little chemical exposure as possible.

In this forum, melamine sponges (Magic Eraser) are often recommended. Simply moisten with water and gently rub. They work well against gray discoloration without directly damaging the surface.
