Hello everyone,

I am considering using a Kallax shelf as wine storage. In principle, the shelf offers suitable storage space, but I am concerned about the temperature conditions, especially since the Kallax is open/narrow and often placed in the living room.

Does anyone have experience with whether there are issues related to temperature stability when storing wine bottles in it? I am particularly asking if the shelf protects the wine from temperature fluctuations and if storing wine there makes sense at all without additional cooling.

My apartment is often quite warm during the day (~22-25°C (72-77°F)), and cools down to about 18°C (64°F) at night, although not consistently. Also, the shelf is partly located near a window.

Thanks in advance for your assessments and experiences!

Kallax is not suitable for long-term wine storage because it lacks insulating properties. Temperature fluctuations negatively affect wine. A constant temperature around 12-15°C (54-59°F) would be better.

Hello japejo,

I completely understand your concerns. Kallax is basically an open wooden furniture piece, and wood provides little temperature storage or regulation. If you want to store wine for a longer period, temperature fluctuations like the ones you describe (22-25°C (72-77°F) during the day, 18°C (64°F) at night) are unfortunately problematic. Wine is sensitive to such changes: it can age faster or lose quality.

That’s true. In your case, it might help to move the shelf further away from the window and keep it in a room without direct sunlight.

However, I would recommend either using a wine cooler or investing in a special wine box with insulating properties if you want to store the wine for longer. For short-term storage it’s okay, but be careful 🙂

Hello japejo,

I have been using a Kallax shelf as a temporary wine storage solution for some time now. Here are some important points I have considered and would like to share:

1. Temperature: As already mentioned, a stable temperature is ideal. The Kallax shelf itself does not offer any temperature control, so the wine is subject to natural room temperature fluctuations.

2. Humidity: Since the Kallax is open, it cannot maintain consistent humidity levels. This is not ideal for corks, which can dry out or develop mold.

3. Placement: The shelf should be kept away from radiators, windows with direct sunlight, or other heat sources. Darkness also benefits the wine, so ideally choose a spot in the room with minimal light exposure.

4. Storage Duration: For wines you plan to drink within a few months, the Kallax is sufficient. For longer-term storage, it becomes problematic. Temperature swings, especially daytime summer temperatures above the 22-25°C (72-77°F) range you mentioned, can affect quality.

5. Access and Organization: A benefit is that the individual compartments allow for organized bottle storage. However, there is no tilting function; the bottles lay horizontally, which is actually optimal.

For me personally, the Kallax is a temporary solution. If you value long-term storage, you should consider a wine climate box or wine cabinet.

I’m curious: Which types of wine do you intend to store (red, white, young, aged, expensive)?

To complement the previous contributions:

The thermal mass of the Kallax shelf is very low, meaning it cannot moderate or store temperature fluctuations. The open sides further promote air circulation, which leads to faster temperature changes around the bottles.

This is particularly critical because temperature peaks above 25°C (77°F) accelerate the breakdown of wine components and speed up aging processes.

A recommendation would be to store wine in a cool, dark place with minimal air movement whenever possible. If this is not achievable with the Kallax shelf, additional insulation or cooling should be considered.

For storage longer than one year, an open Kallax shelf is therefore not advisable.

If short-term storage (up to 3–6 months, depending on the quality of the wine) is sufficient, using it is still acceptable.

Hey japejo,

I share similar views to my predecessors but would like to offer a more relaxed tip: if you absolutely want to use the Kallax, make sure to store the bottles horizontally – this keeps the corks moist.

So the best thing is to move the shelf away from the window; at least your coffee will be cold while the wine doesn’t get too warm ;-)

Otherwise, for the consistently bad months, just get a small wine climate cabinet, which you can easily hide in a compartment. This way, you don’t have to give up the benefits of your Kallax.

Good luck, and may your wine always stay in top condition! 🙂
