Hello everyone, a few months ago I bought a Kallax shelving unit to display my license plates as a collector. The shelf itself is very practical and has the perfect size for my collection. However, I am now facing the problem that the shelves have sagged over time. I used the heavy-duty shelves, but I still couldn’t prevent them from bending, which affects the stability.

My questions to the community: Do you have experience using Kallax for license plate collections? How do you prevent the shelves from sagging? Is it worth installing additional reinforcements, or is the problem mainly due to the weight of the plates? I would appreciate any tips and solutions so that my collection is displayed attractively and the shelving unit remains stable.

Hello, I find this topic really fascinating! I recently built a Kallax for my license plate collection, and I can only say: with a few simple tricks, you can easily make it stable! 🙂

I reinforced my shelves from underneath with thin aluminum profiles – you can screw them in discreetly, and they look super clean. Additionally, the profiles help distribute the load extremely well.

Another tip: don’t just stack the plates flat on top of each other, but slightly offset them. This reduces the pressure on one area, and your shelves will thank you for it!

Try it out, it’s really clever, and your Kallax will stay sturdy! 🙂

I have prepared a brief guide on reinforcing Kallax shelves, as this topic comes up frequently. Please follow these steps:

1. Estimate the load: How much weight will actually be on the shelf? In the case of license plates, I estimate about 8-12 kg (18-26 lbs) per compartment.
2. Obtain materials: Plywood about 6-8 mm (0.2-0.3 inches) thick, cut to the exact size of the compartment.
3. Preparation: Lightly sand the plywood edges to avoid rough surfaces.
4. Installation: Place the plywood under the Kallax shelf and secure it to the underside with small wood screws (approximately 3x20 mm / 1/8"x3/4"). Alternatively, use special brackets that are screwed in from the inside.
5. Important: The screws must not go through the top surface of the shelf, as this would damage its appearance and finish.

Summary: This simple method helps distribute the weight more evenly and prevents sagging. The shelf’s look remains almost unchanged, while the load capacity increases significantly.

If desired, I can also provide recommendations for where to source the materials.
