ᐅ Kallax not suitable for tall storage boxes – any alternatives?

Hello everyone,

I’m considering expanding my storage with the IKEA Kallax shelving unit, but I’ve run into a problem, especially with taller boxes: while the Kallax is very versatile, I’ve heard and experienced that it doesn’t seem ideal for boxes with greater height. Both stability and appearance appear to suffer.

I’m curious if others have noticed the same and what alternatives you would recommend for storing very tall boxes or large containers. Are there better shelving systems or practical solutions that offer similar flexibility but greater durability?

I would appreciate any experiences, tips, and possibly information about prices or build quality. Thanks in advance!

The stability and also the appearance seem to suffer because of this.

This is a crucial point. When you place tall boxes inside a Kallax unit, it often results in an unfavorable load distribution, causing the shelf edges—especially at the joints—to experience stresses that can weaken the shelving.

Alternatively, you could opt for larger modular systems with adjustable shelf heights

I would like to add that modular wooden shelving systems with metal braces offer an ideal combination of stability and flexibility. Wood also absorbs impacts better and provides a more premium look.

A very interesting alternative is made-to-measure shelving from smaller workshops, where you can have shelves designed exactly to fit your box dimensions. Of course, this option tends to be more expensive.

I also wonder whether a mix of open and closed compartments might make sense to create a calmer visual effect and reduce the dominance of the tall boxes.

By the way, how heavy are your boxes on average? That would further influence the choice.
