Hello everyone, I recently bought a KALLAX shelving unit from Ikea and ordered a matching top board. However, during assembly, I noticed that the top board bends significantly under load. The board isn’t especially long – 147 cm (58 inches) – and according to the product information, it should be suitable for normal use.
My specific question is: Could it be that the load capacity of the KALLAX top board is actually exceeded when I place typical items like books or decorations on it? Or do these visible deformations possibly indicate a manufacturing defect or poor material quality? I would like to know how sturdy these boards really are and whether additional reinforcements could prevent this issue.
Thank you in advance for your insights!

Hello, I would like to clarify something: The KALLAX top panel is designed to support a load of approximately 10-15 kg per running meter (7-10 lbs per running foot). This means that point loads, such as a stack of books or equipment with a concentrated heavy weight, can cause bending. In practice, this means it is best to try to distribute loads evenly across the entire surface or use additional supports. I consider faulty manufacturing to be a less likely cause – long-term load and material behavior are probably more significant here. If the panel sags excessively, replacing it or adding reinforcement strips can help.

I think many people underestimate this. If you pay attention to it, you can be very proud of your KALLAX. For anyone needing extra stability: I simply placed a sturdy plywood panel of the right size from the hardware store underneath – it holds up solidly and looks good! 🙂

Why settle for standard Ikea quality when the solution is so simple? Anyone who adds a board for around 40 euros and 20 minutes of work is much better off than with the original cheap board. The discussion about manufacturer quality is nice – but investing money in your own improvements is often the better choice. 🙂
