Hello everyone,

I recently bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and noticed that the top panel is slightly bowed upwards. In other words, it is not flat as I expected, but has a visible curvature when looking at it from above. The construction is otherwise stable, but I’m wondering if this bowing is a production defect or if it is normal for the KALLAX.

I’m particularly interested in whether this curved surface can be corrected in any way. Has anyone had experience with this? Are there established methods or tips on how to level the panel again, for example by screwing, weighting it down, or other measures?

I would appreciate any advice or similar feedback, as I want to avoid returning the shelving unit if the issue can be fixed.

Thanks in advance!

A slight bowing of the top KALLAX panel can occur due to changes in moisture or uneven load distribution. From a technical standpoint, the furniture piece is made of particleboard with a thin laminate coating, which has limited dimensional stability.

To correct the bowing, you can try the following:

1. Apply weights to the underside of the panel to encourage it to flatten over several days.

2. Place the shelf in an environment with stable temperature and humidity levels.

3. If accessible, tighten the screws on the side supports to reinforce the structure.

4. Use professional furniture polish or surface abrasives to improve appearance—however, this will not fix the bowing itself, only the look.

Severe bowing can only be fully resolved by replacing the panel or performing self-repair, which is not recommended.

Tip: If the shelf is newly purchased, consider an exchange if the bowing is noticeably problematic.

This usually works well. Weight the board, ideally for several days, and store it in a dry room.

Glad to help! I have some experience with KALLAX and similar shelving units.

First: The top panel is often made of MDF or particleboard, which can warp due to moisture. To fix the bowing, I recommend the following steps:

1. Empty the shelf and place it completely on a flat, hard surface.
2. From underneath, weigh down the center of the top panel with hardwood boards or thin weights to gently press the slight bow downward.
3. Let this pressure act for at least 48–72 hours.
4. Make sure that surrounding parts are not stressed or distorted.
5. Check if the screws on the side panels are tight. Sometimes the panel isn’t firmly secured and can be stabilized a bit by tightening the screws on the sides.

Common mistakes in repair attempts are:
- Using excessive force or hammering – this damages the decorative finish.
- Uneven pressure, which causes new warping.

If this doesn’t help and the bowing is bothersome, the complaint or warranty route is a reliable alternative, as IKEA often replaces parts without major issues.

I hope these tips help you!

Absolutely right! And I would add: take off your shoes, have some coffee ready, because this requires a bit of patience and a delicate touch ;-)

I agree with that as well: dryness prevents the wood from warping further.

From experience, I can also say that if you place the shelf near a warm radiator, it tends to move and bow. So it’s best not to place it directly next to heating sources.

Good luck, it will be fine again :-)
