ᐅ KALLAX too tall to use as a bedside table – any ideas?

Hello everyone,

I repurposed the Kallax shelving unit from Ikea as a bedside table, but I find that the height of about 77 cm (30 inches) is a bit too tall for my bed and mattress height. I’m looking for ideas on how to modify or supplement the Kallax so that it’s more comfortable to use as a bedside table. It’s also important to me that the storage space is preserved or even improved. Does anyone have creative suggestions or experience with similar situations? Thanks in advance!

Thank you for the very informative discussion so far!

One idea I’d like to add: if you need a bit less storage, you could turn the Kallax on its side and use it as a small horizontal shelf, which lowers the height. This can look stylish, especially in the bedroom, and still provides a surface right next to the bed.

Of course, the storage arrangement changes, but you can still place small boxes or baskets inside. Just something to consider 🙂

Thanks for the suggestion! I had considered that before, but I was worried that without the back panel (or because of the organization) it might look chaotic and I could lose stability.

Do you have any experience with this? I’m thinking about laying the Kallax on its side and reinforcing it with battens. Possibly cutting a back panel to fit. However, the height would still be about 20cm (8 inches) too tall for me when it’s standing upright.

That’s brilliant! 🙂

I tried this myself and reinforced it with corner braces on the inside. I especially prefer small wooden boxes or baskets as an organization system in the compartments; it keeps everything neat and is quite practical. The whole thing barely wobbles.

If you don’t want to attach the back panel, you might try improving stability with strong metal brackets or wooden strips on the outside.

This could be interesting for you if the full height of the upright shelving unit is your main issue!

Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m going to try stabilizing a horizontal Kallax unit using brackets and battens.

I’ll see how best to adjust the height to match my bed frame. Perhaps a combination of laying it flat and raising the baseboard will turn out to be the most practical solution. I’ll keep you updated!
