Hello everyone,
I recently disassembled a Kallax shelf unit to paint it and noticed that I lost some screws during the process. Now I’m wondering specifically: Which screws are typically lost or most likely to go missing when taking apart a Kallax shelf? Are there common weak points where extra care is needed, or screws that should be secured in advance to prevent loss?
I’m a bit unsure if I still have all the screws to safely reassemble the shelf afterward. Maybe someone also has tips on the best way to store or label such screws when disassembling the unit.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Usually, it is mainly the small wall plugs and the conical screws for the back panel that get lost.
When disassembling, it’s best to put everything directly into small bags. Screws, especially those at the connection points of the carcass, are important and should not be lost.

Hello,
regarding the topic "Which screws get lost when disassembling a Kallax," there are indeed some typical areas to watch out for.
The most common “victims” during disassembly are the connecting dowels and the moderately tight cabinet screws, which are often attached to the side panels. The connecting dowels in Kallax are usually made of plastic, are small, and can easily fall out and get lost.
Correct, in addition, there are the nails or staples that hold the thin back panel. These are small and can quickly fly around the room when you remove the back panel. If you plan to take the shelf apart completely, I recommend setting these small parts aside multiple times and labeling them to keep track.
Even more important is to check before disassembly which screws are responsible for the stabilizing inserts, as these are often longer and serve a special function.
Which type of screws did you use exactly? Original IKEA screws or replacements?

Thanks in advance for the quick feedback!
That definitely helps me. I was worried that it might be the load-bearing fasteners, but it seems that’s not the case.
I’m using the original IKEA screws. The back panel is fastened with thin nails, which I noticed quickly when disassembling, but I still have all of them.
Has anyone else had experience with the best way to secure such small parts if there is a pause of several days or weeks between disassembly and reassembly? I want to avoid ending up with little screws scattered on the floor that get lost. Some suggest, for example, storing small screws in clear containers or even empty ice cube trays before continuing work.
Also, I’m unsure whether I can fully reuse the screws during assembly or if it’s better for stability to replace them, especially the plastic dowels. Does anyone have any knowledge about this?
