After my recent move, I find myself with a Kallax shelving unit that I need much less than before. It’s basically surplus – meaning I have more modules than I can reasonably use in my new home. Now I’m considering whether it would be more economical or practical to sell the Kallax or just store it.
This raises the question: How do you usually handle situations like this? Which option do you think makes more sense, especially considering that a Kallax is quite sturdy and of good quality, but I might need it again at another place sometime in the future? I want to weigh the pros and cons not only in terms of cost but also regarding effort, transportation logistics, and depreciation.
Does anyone have tips on what to pay special attention to when selling (e.g., suitable platforms, pricing) or when storing (storage duration, protection against damage)? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

It’s basically surplus – meaning I have more modules than I can actually use effectively for the new apartment. This topic is more interesting than it might seem at first glance, as it depends on several factors: the current condition of the Kallax, the availability of storage space, the potential resale value, and of course your own flexibility.
First of all: Kallax is known for its sturdiness. It generally handles moves well if you are careful. However, this does not rule out damage during transport. If you disassemble the shelf (most Kallax modules are screwed together), be sure to carefully pack all screws and perhaps take photos during assembly – this will greatly simplify reassembly later.
Regarding resale, platforms like eBay Classifieds or local flea markets are the most effective. Naturally, you’ll find buyers looking for individual pieces there. However, the market is saturated, and many people offer similar shelves. Therefore, you should be realistic about the achievable price. The current new price is around 80–120 euros per module, and used you will probably get 30–50% of that depending on condition and demand.
When it comes to storage, there are several things to consider. Storage units cost money (depending on provider and size, around 30–50 euros per month), plus there is transport effort to factor in. It is important that the modules are kept dry and protected from moisture to avoid mold and deformation of the materials.
As a rule of thumb: if you plan to use the shelf again within six months, storing it can make sense. Anything beyond that is often uneconomical. Selling is especially reasonable if you need liquid funds or are sure you won’t need the shelf anymore.
To help you better: how many modules do you have exactly? Do you already have specific offers for storage nearby or any initial inquiries for resale? That would make the decision easier.

Otherwise, always store it, but keep it dry and clean!

I also want to weigh the respective advantages and disadvantages not only in terms of cost but also regarding effort, transport effort, and depreciation. From a neutral perspective, the following points speak for each option:
Selling:
- Liquidity: Immediate income from the sale
- Depreciation: Kallax loses value quickly after purchase, so selling promptly makes sense
- Effort: Time needed for listing, communication with buyers, handover or shipping
Storage:
- Preservation of investment: Little to no depreciation over a short period
- Convenience: No need for assembly and disassembly, logical if reuse is planned
- Costs: Possible storage fees and transport costs
It is important to control humidity and keep the items dust-free during storage. Storing in an unheated area can affect both material and appearance.
My tip: If you don’t plan to use it within the next 6 months, sell. Storage only makes sense if you expect to use it soon or want to avoid high moving costs.

Rashadmeo11 Apr 2022 19:32Wow, I know the Kallax issue all too well! 🙂
I would definitely recommend storing it if you think you'll need it again in the future – such a versatile shelf is hard to do without! Plus, you get to keep that great feeling of being able to start using it right away next time without having to buy a new one.
But if you’re completely changing direction, then just get rid of it and make room for new inspiration! :-) Be creative – I once converted my Kallax into a plant shelf in the living room, which gave it a whole new perspective!
Whatever you decide, the most important thing is that the choice feels right for you. Good luck!
