ᐅ The surface of KALLAX becomes dull quickly – does anyone else experience this?

mukloAbout a month ago, I bought a KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA, and after a relatively short period of use, I’ve noticed that the surface has lost a lot of its gloss and looks increasingly matte. Especially in areas that are touched or wiped more often, the finish sometimes appears worn and almost dull. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a known issue with the type of melamine coating used, or could it be related to cleaning or maintenance? I would appreciate any insights into possible causes or tips on how to restore or protect the surface.

That is typical for melamine surfaces. Exactly, the surface of the KALLAX is usually made of a melamine resin-coated particleboard, which is quite durable but does not have a paint or high-gloss finish. Mattifying occurs due to micro-scratches and abrasion from normal use.To avoid further matte spots, the only solution is gentle cleaning and avoiding friction from hard or rough materials. High-gloss or anti-fingerprint coatings, as found on other furniture, are rare on KALLAX.

Could it be related to cleaning or care? Yes, abrasive cleaners like scouring powders or alcohol-based products quickly damage the surface and accelerate the mattifying effects.Alternatively, you can try using furniture polish designed for melamine surfaces to slightly refresh the surface, but don’t expect miracles.

The same thing happened to my KALLAX shelf, and I was initially disappointed. What worked for me was very gentle care and, above all, patience: since then, I have been using a microfiber cloth with only water and occasionally a mild solution of dish soap and water. No harsh chemicals anymore.
I can only confirm that. Sometimes it also helps to protect the furniture deliberately, for example by using coasters or protective pads. Maybe you can also find accessories specifically designed for melamine surfaces. Keep your spirits up, I think almost everyone with these kinds of shelves has faced similar issues. 🙂
