Hello everyone,

I recently experienced water damage in my apartment, which unfortunately also affected my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit. The back panel and some of the compartments are visibly swollen, and now I am wondering if the furniture is still usable or if I should completely dispose of it and replace it.

My question is: Can a KALLAX unit still be used after water damage—especially when the wood panels and back panel show visible swelling—or can moisture cause long-term damage that is not immediately apparent? How does this affect the stability and safety of the unit, particularly if it needs to bear loads?

I would appreciate any advice on how to assess the damage and what measures (drying, repairs) might be effective in saving the shelving unit.

Thanks in advance for your help!

My opinion: If the wood has already swollen, its structural integrity is significantly compromised and it will never be as stable as before.

Many people waste time and money trying to dry it out, but practically, I would dispose of such a shelf. There is a high risk that a side panel or shelf will fail under the next load.

Additionally, moisture and germs often accumulate in porous, swollen areas. The risk of mold on furniture made from particleboard with water damage should not be underestimated. At the very least, a thorough surface treatment with an anti-mold agent is necessary.

I would say that taking a big risk offers no benefit. For a relatively inexpensive KALLAX, repairing it makes little sense. It will only hold you back.

Hello Silvestern,

first of all, I am sorry that you are dealing with this damage. Regarding your question: A KALLAX is made of coated wood-based material, which can be severely affected by prolonged exposure to moisture.

Basically, visible swelling is a clear sign that the material has absorbed water. This often compromises stability, especially in the back panels, which are usually made of thinner particleboard. In the long term, you should check whether the shelf still stands securely and if there are any bends or cracks.

If you want to keep the furniture, you should let it dry completely – ideally in a warm, dry place with good air circulation. Using fans can help. After that, you can check if the stability is sufficient.

Important: Moisture can promote mold growth, so inspect the shelf carefully, especially in the corners of the back panels. If you decide to continue using it, avoid storing delicate items inside.

In summary: Only if the shelf appears stable after drying and no mold spots are visible is further use acceptable. Otherwise, it is better to replace it.

I hope this was helpful.

That is exactly the core of the issue. Particleboard is irreversibly damaged once moisture has penetrated it. Even if the surface feels hard again after drying, the fibers have swollen and broken, which greatly reduces its load-bearing capacity.

Using fans to assist drying can help.

Absolutely crucial: fast (controlled) drying can reduce further damage. However, this does not change the fact that the material remains permanently weakened.

To assess safety, the testing method is:
- Apply a light load corresponding to the intended use weight
- Observe whether corners or shelves stretch or deform
- If more than minimal deflection occurs, the shelf loses significant functionality

Conclusion: For heavy loads or valuable items, a KALLAX affected by water damage should be rejected. For decoration or light items, it may still be usable after thorough drying, but with caution.
