ᐅ Kallax stained after dye accident – is cleaning possible?

Hello everyone,

A few days ago, I had a dye accident with a fabric on my IKEA Kallax shelf. Some of the white surfaces became stained, probably due to dye residues that leaked during the process. My question is whether and how these stains can be effectively cleaned from the Kallax without damaging or discoloring the surfaces.

The shelf is made of a coated fiberboard, right? I’d prefer not to use harsh cleaners that could ruin the furniture. Do you have any tips or experience on how to remove dye or fabric dye stains from such a surface?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Are there perhaps gentler specialty cleaners for melamine resin that are better suited for these kinds of stains?

Yes, there are special melamine resin cleaners or plastic cleaners available in well-stocked furniture stores or online. These cleaners are formulated to avoid damaging the surface while effectively targeting dirt and stains. Check the product description to see if it is suitable for “coated surfaces.”

Additionally, if the stains do not completely disappear, you might consider a minor refurbishment using an appropriate film or surface covering as a repair option.

It is a water-based reactive paint that should actually be well fixed.

The initial situation isn’t that bad. Reactive paints can usually be dissolved fairly well when still fresh. Before testing with isopropanol, did you try cleaning with warm soapy water and gentle mechanical abrasion (without applying too much pressure)?

If so, how pronounced are the stains? Are they rather superficial or have they penetrated deeper into the coating?

Have you tried warm soapy water and mechanical scrubbing before the isopropanol test?

Yes, I actually tried that first. The stains are quite superficial and feel slightly rough but have no deep cracks or damage.

I suspect the paint has penetrated the surface and dried there. It shines slightly differently in those spots compared to the rest, which makes the stain quite noticeable.

I will now order a special melamine resin cleaner and report back whether it removes the stains better than isopropanol. Thanks to everyone for the tips so far!
