ᐅ KALLAX Slightly Tilted After Installation – What Could Be the Cause?

Hello everyone,

I recently assembled an IKEA KALLAX shelving unit and noticed that after assembly, the unit is slightly tilted. It leans a bit, which is noticeable to the naked eye, especially when used as a room divider. It sits flush against the wall, but on the floor, it doesn’t seem entirely stable.

My questions:
1. What are the common causes for a KALLAX to stand slightly tilted after assembly?
2. Are these usually due to assembly errors or unevenness in the floor/wall?
3. How can such tilts best be fixed without having to take the whole thing apart?

I followed the assembly instructions step by step, all screws are tightened properly, so it should actually be stable. Maybe someone has experienced this before and can help me understand what to look out for?

Thanks for your advice!

If the KALLAX is slightly tilted, simply place small furniture pads or felt gliders under the short side. This often levels the shelf.

Check the back panel: it should be firmly screwed in without any wobbling. Remove nails and replace them with screws if necessary.

Do not overtighten the screws, as this can warp the panels.

Hello Jael35,

I can totally understand how frustrating a slight tilt can be, especially when you’ve just assembled the piece of furniture and everything should be perfectly aligned.

I had the exact same issue a few weeks ago and wasn’t sure if I had done something wrong. For me, it was a combination of an uneven floor surface and a slightly angled back panel attachment.

What helped me was trying out different materials under the feet (felt pads, wood scraps, plastic pads) and reinforcing the back panel with additional screws.

From a psychological perspective: just stay calm – this is usually easy to fix, and you’re definitely not the only one experiencing this problem 🙂

Hi Jael35,

a KALLAX really has some surprises – it looks so simple, but then it can be tricky during assembly ;-)

I would recommend not pressing the shelf directly against the wall, but leaving a few millimeters of space and checking the back panel very carefully.

A little tip from me: use small adjustable furniture feet, which you can find at any hardware store. They can be adjusted continuously. It’s really easy and only costs a few dollars – and voilà, your shelf can stand perfectly, even on uneven floors.

Don’t worry, with a bit of patience your KALLAX will soon stand firm like a rock! 😉

Many underestimate how even small floor unevenness can cause a KALLAX to be tilted

Hmm, that’s actually too simplistic. Yes, floor unevenness plays a role, but I would argue that in most cases it comes down to the assembly. The instructions are often far too brief for inexperienced DIYers.

If you don’t carefully check whether everything is square and just assemble it blindly, you’ll end up with a crooked piece of furniture. Of course, the floor contributes, but that doesn’t eliminate the root cause – the frame itself needs to be level.

Also: This idea of “not pushing the shelf against the wall” as PERON suggests is nonsense; you should position the furniture against the wall to ensure stability.

I think most people simply underestimate the level of precision required during assembly.

In most cases, the issue is with the assembly

Hello everyone,

I would suggest a balanced view: yes, careful assembly is absolutely important. But furniture like the KALLAX is also designed to compensate for minor floor irregularities—as long as the back panel and joints are properly installed.

I recommend that anyone suspecting assembly errors check the back panel and, if possible, secure it with screws instead of the thin nails. If the instructions require you to use nails, you can reinforce it afterward by attaching small brackets on the inside of the panel, which greatly improves stability.

Regarding the floor: minor unevenness is quite normal, and adjustable furniture glides with swivel feet make all the difference here.

All in all: assemble carefully and check the floor! That way, the KALLAX will stand firmly.
