Hello everyone,

I just noticed that one of the side panels on my IKEA KALLAX shelf has cracked. It is the narrow side panel attached on the outside, basically the covering panel.

My question is whether anyone has experience with effectively and permanently gluing such a side panel, or if replacing the entire side panel is the only solution?

If gluing is an option: Which adhesives work well for this, and what is the recommended procedure to ensure the panel stays stable and the repair isn’t very noticeable?

The damage is at a corner, a kind of chip with a crack, not a large break. The furniture is a bit older, maybe 3-4 years, but it doesn’t carry much weight on top.

I would appreciate any specific tips or personal experiences, thanks!

Hello everyone,

As a supplement to the previous explanations, here are a few technical details:

KALLAX side panels are made of coated particleboard with a melamine resin surface. While this provides good abrasion resistance, it makes bonding more difficult because the coating significantly reduces adhesion.

Therefore, the following applies:

- Before gluing, be sure to sand the bonding areas at the broken edge to remove the coating so that the adhesive can bond directly to the raw wood.
- PU glue is well suited because it can adhere even to slightly damp or uneven surfaces.
- Alternatively, two-component epoxy resins are recommended because they offer much stronger bonding strength and durability, although they are more complex to handle.

Regarding replacement:

IKEA offers easily replaceable side panels with exact dimensions. This prevents further damage caused by incorrect installation.

Conclusion: If long-term stability is your goal and you have time for a proper repair, replace the panel. For a quick and cost-effective temporary solution, gluing may be sufficient.

This is my assessment so far from a craftsmanship and material perspective.
