Hello everyone, I have an issue with my Kallax shelf: the shelves keep cracking at the corners, even though I only store normal loads on them. It seems like the material reinforcement at the corners is simply not sufficient, or the wood is somehow too brittle. Has anyone experienced this problem before? I’m especially interested in repair ideas that provide more than just a short-term fix and actually improve the stability of the boards. Tips for prevention to stop the corners from fraying further are also welcome. Thanks in advance for your help!

A quick question for teo-fra: How old is your Kallax? Older shelves can become more brittle over time due to drying out and aging, making them more prone to damage.
If it is somewhat older, preventive treatment of the wood surfaces might help, such as applying a wood impregnation or furniture oil – this keeps the edges more flexible.
Also: How humid is the room climate? Dry air promotes cracks.

How old is your Kallax? The shelf is about 5 years old. The room’s humidity is within a normal range, with no extreme dryness or dampness.
Thanks also for the tip about sealing; I hadn’t thought of that. I’ll look into suitable products.
There are many good suggestions here—I’ll try a combination of wood glue, metal brackets, and possibly plastic profiles. 🙂
Update on my project: Yesterday, I applied wood glue to the cracks and reinforced the corners with small metal brackets. I also covered the edges with plastic profiles.
The process went well, and the shelf now feels much more stable. Thanks to everyone for the tips!
If anyone is interested, I can report back in a few weeks on how it holds up.

In particular, whether the combination of glue, brackets, and plastic profiles actually reinforces the shelf so it can carry your loads reliably over time.
Wishing you much success and looking forward to your feedback.
