ᐅ Kallax shelves breaking under weight – is the complaint justified?

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Kallax shelf unit from Ikea and chose the version with shelves made of wood-based panels for a bit more stability. What really frustrates me now is that several shelves have broken after a short time, even though I consider the weight I placed on them to be normal and within the limits specified in the product manual.

My main question is: What have your experiences been with complaints to Ikea in such cases? Is a claim accepted if the shelves break despite proper use according to the guidelines? Or are there usually issues with goodwill or customer service?

I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences or tips, especially if anyone else has had similar damage and how the return or replacement process went.

Thanks!

Complaints are accepted if the shelf has not been overloaded or improperly installed. Simply provide the receipt and a photo.

That's how it is – and if not, then you're left with broken boards right in the middle of the living room and just have to make the best of it. 😉

But seriously: Sometimes the damage is caused by external factors, such as moisture or shifts in the subfloor, which are naturally difficult for Ikea to control.

Exactly. These factors should be checked before making a claim. A mechanical break can also be the result of warping and not the material itself.

Additionally, Ikea usually checks whether the terms of use have been followed – meaning no excessive point loads from overly heavy objects on specific spots.

If in doubt, this can lead to the claim being rejected.

Additionally, I would like to point out that the weight limits stated in Ikea’s product information include safety margins and are based on evenly distributed loads.

A point load can cause the shelf to break more quickly, even if the total weight is within the limit.

So, if breaks appear on the shelves at points or edges with high load concentration, Ikea will most likely accept the claim, provided you can prove this.
