ᐅ KALLAX Shelves Are Not Dustproof – Is There a Better Solution?

I have a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and use some additional shelves to create more organization. However, I noticed that the shelves are not completely dustproof – dust and dirt tend to accumulate quite quickly on the surfaces and inside the compartments, especially along the edges where the shelves rest.

My question to the community is: Are there practical ways to make the shelves or storage space in a KALLAX unit more dust-resistant?

I’m not looking for a complete seal, but rather practical and achievable solutions that can significantly improve dust protection. Has anyone had experience with adding seals, using protective films, or maybe alternatives that are easy to implement without losing the flexibility of the shelving unit?

I would appreciate any tips or advice on how to better manage this issue, as regular cleaning becomes quite tiresome over time.

Basically, KALLAX shelves are made from simple wood fiberboard without any special surface sealing. The edges are exposed, which offers little resistance to dust buildup. To improve dust resistance, I recommend attaching self-adhesive edge protectors made of plastic or rubber that slightly overlap to create a barrier.

Additionally, a thin, transparent protective film or PVC-cut inserts can be placed on the shelves. This protects the actual surface from dust accumulation and makes cleaning much easier.

Regularly closing the open shelves with doors from a third-party system can also significantly reduce the dust issue. It is important with all measures that ventilation is not completely blocked to avoid moisture buildup.

I have KALLAX myself and use acrylic sheets as shelves. They have a smooth surface, are easy to clean, and prevent dust from accumulating underneath.

You can have them easily cut to size, so they fit perfectly.

I know that feeling well – I was always frustrated because dust kept getting into my KALLAX storage unit. Your idea of adding doors has encouraged me to finally give it a try.

I’ve also wondered if fabric storage boxes might help. They close better than open shelves and are flexible. However, fabric doesn’t completely keep out dust.

Who has experience with these boxes in relation to dust? I think it’s always a matter of finding a compromise between dust protection and ease of use.
