Hello everyone,
I recently bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and decided to paint the fronts afterward to better match the color scheme of my living room. The new doors turned out milky white and look great, but now they don’t close properly or usually stay slightly ajar. I suspect that the painting has affected the mechanism or the fit of the doors.
I am particularly interested in:
1. How can this issue be resolved without removing the paint?
2. Are there any specific tips for better adjusting KALLAX doors after painting?
3. Or is the problem more related to the door fittings themselves, which may no longer function properly with the added paint layer?
I treated the doors with standard wood varnish and allowed sufficient drying time between coats. Still, the hinges now feel somewhat stiffer, even though I have loosened and re-tightened the screws.
Looking forward to your experiences and helpful advice!

I am familiar with this issue: paint can cause doors to become slightly thicker, which may prevent the hinges from fitting properly. My advice: completely loosen the screws, remove the door, reposition the hinges slightly deeper, and then tighten the screws again. For KALLAX, lightly sanding the hinge recess often helps to ensure the door closes flush again.
Hello jegoki,
First of all, it’s good that you allowed the doors to dry properly in between – this prevents warping later on. In my experience, the issue with painted KALLAX doors not closing properly is almost always due to the additional paint layer. The paint increases the door thickness by a few tenths of a millimeter, which, given the tight tolerances of the hinges, can quickly cause problems.
Here are some technical details and suggested solutions:
1. Hinge adjustment: Many KALLAX doors use simple butt hinges, which have limited adjustability. Loosening the screws and slightly repositioning the door can help. Make sure to align the door precisely straight, otherwise it will sit crooked.
2. Dimension check: After painting, measure the exact thickness of the doors. If the paint has been applied unevenly, this can affect the fit.
3. Light sanding: Carefully sanding the edge of the door where it contacts the shelving unit may help. However, don’t remove too much material, as this will create too much play.
4. Replacing hinges: Sometimes it’s worth switching to higher-quality hinges with better adjustability (e.g., cabinet hinges with 3D adjustment) in order to fine-tune the fit.
5. Check accessibility: Depending on how you painted, the hinge mounting area might be glued or painted over, weakening the screw hold. In that case, carefully re-drilling and possibly reinforcing with wood glue or dowels can help.
How exactly did you attach your hinges? Are they original IKEA hinges or did you buy new ones? Also, do you know if the paint has filled the recesses in the door for the hinges? That would be important to know in order to provide more targeted help.
Best regards!

Hey jegoki,
“The new doors have turned milky white and look great, but now they don’t close properly and mostly stay slightly open.”
That sounds like a typical paint issue with KALLAX – the good news is that it’s usually easy to fix 🙂
I had a similar problem with a black KALLAX; the wood gained a bit of extra volume due to the thick paint layer, which made the hinges somewhat strained. But with the following tips, it became perfect again:
1. Loosen the door hinge and remove the door
2. Sand the edges of the door and, if necessary, also the hinge’s contact surface on the unit (careful not to overdo it!)
3. Slightly reposition the hinge inward
4. Reattach the door and test
If the doors still don’t close properly, check the hinges for looseness. If your hinges are too strong, you can switch to softer springs – this makes closing easier and reduces the problem.
Keep in mind that a DIY project like this also needs a bit of fine-tuning before everything fits perfectly.
Good luck, and get in touch if you need more tips!

Was it a wet paint process with multiple coats, or just a thin layer?

Sanding the edges of the door and, if necessary, the hinge mounting surface on the shelving unitThat is a valid suggestion, but it is important to be very careful here to avoid compromising the stability and appearance of the doors.
I would also question whether the moisture or stress caused by the paint layers might lead to some warping of the wood, which can’t be fully corrected by just adjusting the hinges. Perhaps using hinges with greater tolerance or more flexible mounting systems could help.
What type of hinges are installed exactly? Original IKEA hinges offer limited adjustment range – it might be worth replacing them with higher-quality cabinet hinges that provide better adjustability.
I would also recommend checking the paint build-up with a caliper – even a very slight thickening can affect how the doors close. In that case, minor modifications like adding shims behind the hinge or gently rounding the edges of the cabinet could help.
