Hello everyone,
I have an issue with my Kallax shelf from Ikea: despite careful maintenance and normal use, the coating starts peeling off after just a few months. I have followed all recommended cleaning methods, do not use any harsh products, and make sure no moisture affects it. Nevertheless, small parts of the surface come off in several places, leaving unsightly spots.
My question is: does anyone have experience with whether Ikea accepts claims in such cases and how successful these usually are? Are there specific conditions that need to be met, or is it more of a case-by-case decision?
I am quite sure that there has been no improper handling and that it is more likely a material or manufacturing defect. However, I don’t want to just assume this, but rather seek advice here on the best way to proceed.
Looking forward to your tips and information!

Did you also check if there was any impact damage? Thanks for asking! No, I can confidently rule out any impact damage. The shelf is located at my desk and is only used to store folders and smaller items. It is stable and hasn’t been moved or rearranged since purchase.

Storage and transport are factorsThe shelf was bought at the local Ikea and I picked it up myself. I consider the storage on site to be unproblematic, as the shelf remained on pallets in its original packaging for several weeks.
I will contact customer service tomorrow and hope my complaint will be accepted. If anyone has tips on the exact wording for the complaint description, please share.

Alberto5112 Aug 2022 19:35I understand how frustrating it can be when something at home breaks despite proper care. I’ve experienced a similar situation myself, and I can tell you that patience is often important. Sometimes customer service first wants to know exactly what you have tried, and it’s worth staying calm and polite.
I hope it works out for you! Please feel free to keep us updated on the outcome.

If anyone has suggestions for the exact wording of a complaint description, please share.I would write it like this:
Dear Ikea Team,
I am contacting you regarding my Kallax shelf unit, purchased on [date], as the finish has started to peel off in several places after only a few months of use despite careful and normal maintenance. The shelf has been used exclusively under typical household conditions, so improper handling or mechanical damage can be ruled out.
I kindly ask you to review the situation and offer a goodwill solution in the form of a repair, replacement, or refund.
Thank you in advance.
This clearly states the important points.
Great that you want to contact customer service! 🙂
It’s especially important to stay polite with Ikea, as their employees often have limited authority. If you clearly explain your complaint, you’ll have the best chance of success.
This sentence is really good and gets straight to the point.
