Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought an IKEA Kallax shelving unit with caster wheels to make it easier to move around the room. Unfortunately, I noticed that the unit tends to tip forward, even when only lightly loaded—especially when using the upper shelves. The casters can be locked, but that doesn’t seem to prevent the tipping very well.

I’m interested in proven solutions or modifications you know of to effectively secure the Kallax on wheels against tipping forward. Are there special fasteners, different types of casters, or additional stabilization options that can make the unit safer?

If it’s relevant: The unit stands on carpet, is filled with books and decorations, and the casters have a standard diameter of about 5cm (2 inches).

Thanks in advance for your tips!

I’m familiar with the issue of tipping – it happened to me as well, and it can be quite frustrating.

The problem is likely that the center of gravity is high when fully loaded, and the casters don’t provide enough grip or counterbalance. I tried weighting the bottom of the shelving unit with heavy items, which helped. Still, I eventually added angle brackets to secure it to the wall.

I’d be interested to know whether you need the shelving unit to remain mobile permanently, or if a fixed installation would be an option? Then we could consider more ideas.

I can only recommend using wider casters, preferably with locking brakes and wheels suitable for carpet.

In addition, it helps to concentrate the weight at the bottom.

The main issue with the Kallax unit on casters is its tendency to tip over due to a high center of gravity and the relatively small contact area of the wheels.

What often helps:
- Sturdy casters with a large diameter and a reliable locking brake to prevent sudden jolts during use.
- Securing it to the wall: A bracket or cleat fixed to the back of the Kallax and the wall. This prevents tipping even when the shelf is loaded.
- Adding weight inside: Placing heavy books or similar items at the bottom to lower the center of gravity.
- Alternative option: For carpeted floors, special casters with a larger contact area that don’t sink in, thereby stabilizing the balance.

Can you specify how the shelf will be used? Will it remain permanently against a wall, or does it need to be fully mobile?

Also: Are the casters fixed or swivel? Swivel casters can increase the risk of tipping when the unit rolls over uneven surfaces.

Parking brakes are mandatory. If the wheels are too small, tipping can occur.

Alternative: Retrofit with larger diameter caster wheels and store heavy items at the bottom.

A Kallax unit on casters tends to tip over especially when the center of gravity is higher than the contact points of the casters. This is the case with your books on top and the height of the casters.

To prevent this, you can try the following:

1. Replace the casters with toilet roll holders, which have a larger base area and a braking function.
2. Attach U-shaped metal brackets to the back, ideally fixing them to the wall.
3. Always store heavy items at the bottom to lower the center of gravity.

If the shelf occasionally needs to be moved, you can leave the brackets loose so they act only as tipping protection.

It sounds complicated, but it really improves safety.
