Emiliano6922 Nov 2020 19:43Hello everyone,
I recently bought an IKEA Kallax shelf unit, and it is placed on a thin carpet in my living room. Unfortunately, the shelf wobbles with every step I take nearby – it feels like the feet don’t have a solid grip. This issue is quite annoying, especially when I try to put things on or take things off the shelf, as the entire Kallax unit then moves.
I suspect that the carpet is affecting the stability, but I’m not sure whether I just need to put something underneath or if there are other practical and effective solutions. Has anyone experienced this problem and maybe has some useful tips on how to stabilize a Kallax shelf on carpet without damaging the carpet or the floor?
Thank you in advance for your support!

I recently bought an IKEA Kallax shelf, and it stands on a thin carpet in my living room. Unfortunately, the shelf wobbles every time I take a step next to it – it feels like the feet don’t have a firm grip. The wobbling usually occurs because the furniture legs rest unevenly on the carpet, which as a soft surface does not distribute the weight evenly. An effective solution is to place a firm, non-slip pad under each Kallax foot, such as rubber or felt glides attached to a thin wooden or plastic base.
These stabilize the shelf, prevent it from sinking into the carpet, and reduce movement. Alternatively, you can slightly raise the feet to increase the contact area on the carpet. It’s important to ensure a non-slip surface to minimize further shifting.
Another option is to use anti-slip mats designed specifically for carpets under the shelf. These provide more friction and prevent sliding when weight or vibrations occur.
Avoid placing the shelf directly on the carpet without an appropriate protective layer, as this can cause damage to the furniture or the carpet over time.

Additionally, I recommend measuring the feet precisely before adding pads to cut perfectly fitting plates. It’s best to use material that isn’t too thick so the shelf keeps its original height and doesn’t tilt.
Another option, if you’re a bit handy, is to make small wooden blocks or narrow bases with non-slip rubber strips. You can screw or glue these directly under the Kallax feet – this makes the shelf much more stable on carpeted floors.
If the shelf has no feet and stands directly on the floor, a thin, firm base such as a sturdy plywood board or an anti-slip mat could be screwed underneath the entire Kallax. This also improves stability and prevents it from wobbling.
I hope this helps! 🙂

Does anyone know this issue and maybe has practical tips on how to stabilize the Kallax shelf on a carpet without damaging the carpet or the floor? Here is a step-by-step guide on how to systematically fix the wobbling of the Kallax shelf on a carpet:
1. First, check if the shelf itself is level and has no warped parts. Use a spirit level to measure the flatness of all sides.
2. Inspect the feet: with Kallax, these are often small wooden edges or bases supporting the shelf. Are they sitting evenly or are some slightly lifted?
3. For the base, I recommend these materials:
- Felt pads: protect the floor and provide slight grip,
- Rubber pads: offer non-slip adhesion,
- Small stable wooden boards or plywood with an anti-slip rubber backing.
4. Glue or screw the chosen protective pads directly onto the Kallax feet. If needed, slightly raise the feet to compensate for unevenness.
5. On a thick carpet, it can help to place a thin, stable board (multiplex or MDF, about 3-5mm (0.1-0.2 inches)) between the carpet and the shelf. Make sure the board covers a large enough area to better distribute the weight.
6. As an alternative to wooden boards, you can also use household anti-slip mats (e.g., for drawers or carpets) to reduce wobbling.
7. Avoid letting the shelf vibrate over time by, for example, securing it to the wall to prevent tipping.
In short: you need a firm, stable, and non-slip connection between the Kallax feet and the carpet. Small parts like felt pads alone often are not enough. A combination of a solid base plus rubber or felt pads usually provides the best stability.
If you want, I can also share sources for these materials.
