Hello everyone, I recently purchased a new IKEA KALLAX shelving unit, brand new—no returns or anything like that. However, I noticed that the back panel has an unusually rough surface—it doesn’t feel smooth or neatly finished, but rather rough and even somewhat uneven in places.

Now I’m wondering if this could be a manufacturing defect or if this is normal for the current KALLAX series? I’ve seen back panels from other IKEA shelves before, and they were clearly much smoother.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Or could the rough texture actually be intentional, perhaps for stability or material reasons? I would appreciate an informed opinion on whether I should report this as a defect or if I’m just overthinking it.

The back panels of KALLAX shelves are usually made of a thin MDF board, which is either painted or laminated. Depending on the production batch, the surface texture may vary slightly. A minor roughness is not considered a manufacturing defect but rather a characteristic of the material used and the surface finishing process.

However, unevenness should not occur. If the panel feels very rough or uneven, this could indicate a faulty surface coating or damage during transport.

My advice: Check the back panel for stability (e.g., is it securely attached at all fixing points?) and for any other visible defects. If only the roughness bothers you, it is usually a technical feature rather than a legal defect.

I experienced the same with my new KALLAX. The back panel is slightly rough, which is not a defect. Just assemble it as is, it will hold firmly.

I agree with that. The back panel mainly serves to provide stability and is not treated as surface-critical as visible side panels.

Additionally, the material is often MDF with a thin foil or paint coating, which is inherently less smooth than plastic or solid wood surfaces.

If the appearance or feel bothers you a lot, you might consider a later covering, for example with fabric or leftover wallpaper – I did this on a KALLAX back panel and was satisfied.

I understand that this can be confusing. Naturally, you expect new products to be flawless. I once worried that an uneven back panel would steal valuable space, but after some thought: the back panel on KALLAX is usually just a thin sheet. Roughness or minor unevenness is simply normal in this case.

I wouldn’t worry as long as the back panel is securely installed and there are no significant damages visible. Maybe a quick contact with IKEA could provide reassurance – their customer service is often very accommodating. 🙂

I am more inclined to ask: Why is so much emphasis placed on the back panel of the KALLAX? It is never visible unless the shelf unit is freestanding in the room. So why insist on smooth surfaces for a part that does not have a significant visual function?

I believe this is another case of typical IKEA mass production: form follows function for non-visible parts. The back panel is rough because it saves on materials and costs.

If a smooth back panel were truly important, it could be painted or veneered – but that would increase the cost. In my opinion, caring about perfect texture on non-visible parts is a bit over the top.
