ᐅ Using Kallax as a Shoe Rack – Is It Resistant to Moisture?

Hello everyone, I have a somewhat unusual question about using the IKEA Kallax shelving unit as a shoe rack, especially in areas with increased moisture, such as hallways or basements. Since the Kallax is made of wood-based panels, I am curious about how well it resists moisture when storing shoes that might be wet or damp regularly—especially during winter or rainy weather. Can such a shelf hold up without the shelves swelling or mold developing? Are there any special protective measures or treatments that could make the Kallax better suited for this kind of use? I look forward to expert experiences or tips on how to “repurpose” the Kallax as a shoe rack without moisture damaging the material in the long term.

I think, Agilulf, it really depends on the load. If you use the Kallax just as a temporary shoe rack and the shoes are mostly dry, it should last a long time. But especially in winter, when snow drips off the shoes, moisture can quickly cause problems. I once used an old Kallax in the hallway, and now I have small warps on the shelves. My advice is to either place a sturdy plastic sheet or enamel trays under the shoes. This way you avoid direct moisture. 🙂

Well, honestly, it’s a bit like with your mother-in-law – you can tolerate a lot, but eventually the wood rebels! 😉 Seriously though, the material isn’t designed for moisture, and mold will always find a way if conditions allow. A small tip from me: place newspaper under wet shoes and change it regularly. This helps prevent mold stains on the shelf and moisture damage. And if you want to upgrade the Kallax a bit, you can coat the shelves with a waterproof varnish, which gives you some extra protection. But keep in mind: the shelf will only look great if you handle moisture properly.

Kallax is not suitable for moisture. Either use waterproof underlays or, preferably, choose a shoe rack made of metal or plastic. If moisture is minimized, it can be used to a limited extent.
