ᐅ The KALLAX unit is missing a base panel – should I buy a replacement?

SulitanHello everyone,
Some time ago, I purchased the KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and noticed during assembly that the base panel at the bottom is missing. According to the instructions, the base panel seems to be an important element for ensuring stability and protecting the unit from direct contact with the floor.
My question is: Is it worth buying a replacement part for this base panel directly from IKEA, or are there alternative solutions that are both stable and cost-effective? I want to avoid the shelving unit becoming unstable or sustaining damage from direct floor contact over time.
Has anyone experienced missing or damaged base panels with the KALLAX shelving unit? How did you solve the issue? Additionally, I am interested in whether the absence of the base panel can really lead to long-term problems.
Thanks in advance for your insights and recommendations!

Using the original base plate is definitely recommended. The base plate in KALLAX not only serves as an aesthetic element but also plays a crucial role in ensuring that the shelf stands evenly on the floor by distributing pressure and preventing moisture damage to the bottom shelf.
It is important that replacement parts are original or at least an exact fit, as otherwise stability and warranty could be compromised. A cheap DIY solution usually does not provide the same precision or material quality, which can lead to damage to the shelf over time.

To look at the topic in more detail: The base panel of the KALLAX shelf serves several physical and structural purposes. Firstly, it provides a sufficiently large support surface that distributes the pressure on the floor, thereby protecting the shelf material from localized pressure damage. Secondly, it prevents direct contact between moisture on the floor and the wood-based material.
If the base panel is missing, there is a risk that the cabinet material will sag, warp, or become damaged at the floor connection points over time—especially on floors that are not completely even or in more humid environments. Its absence can also mean reduced stability, as the base panel contributes to the overall rigidity.
Furthermore, you should check whether the original base panel is suitable for the specific model you have, as there may be different versions. If it is not possible to purchase a replacement part from IKEA, a temporary solution could be to use thick rubber feet or a layer of water-repellent material; however, this is not a permanent fix.
I would be interested to know how exactly the missing panel was identified in your case: Is it missing completely or only partially? And what kind of load is expected on your shelf?

The base plate is completely missing, not just a part of it. The shelf is currently temporarily resting on felt pads, but I find that too unstable for the long term. The load is normal for everyday use – books, decorations, a few heavy binders.
One more question: Does anyone know if IKEA generally provides replacement base plates, even if the plate isn’t damaged but simply missing? Should I contact them directly or rely on third-party suppliers?
