Hello everyone, I need your advice: I bought a KALLAX shelf from IKEA and assembled it right after laying the carpet in the living room. Unfortunately, the shelf is now uneven and wobbles slightly when touched, which is probably due to the uneven floor. I suspect that the new carpet is thicker, causing the KALLAX to no longer sit level. My question is: How can I stabilize and permanently level the shelf without too much DIY or unsightly fixings? Are there proven solutions to compensate for small unevenness or height differences in the floor, both visually and functionally? I want the shelf to be secure and straight so that both the appearance and stability are right. Thank you!

Hi, the easiest solution would be adjustable furniture feet under the KALLAX. You can adjust their height to make the shelf stand straight again.

Hello! It is quite common for furniture like the KALLAX to no longer sit perfectly level immediately after carpet installation. Since carpet has more thickness than a hard floor, slight unevenness can occur.

Adjustable furniture feet are actually a very good and long-lasting solution, as they can be adjusted with millimeter precision. If that doesn’t appeal to you, you could also use thin felt pads or small wooden wedges placed under the shelf. Just make sure they are non-slip so the shelf doesn’t slide.

Another option is to slightly remove the carpet under the shelf or place a thin underlay such as a firm plastic sheet there to increase stability. It is important that the solution remains safe and stable in the long term, so the shelf does not tip over. 🙂

An important consideration on this topic: The KALLAX shelves are not designed to be height-adjustable and are quite sensitive to uneven surfaces, which often results in wobbling or leaning.

Therefore, the goal is to compensate for unevenness directly under the feet. In addition to adjustable feet, small self-adhesive plastic or rubber pads of varying thickness can also be used. These have the advantage of protecting the surface and providing slip resistance in everyday use.

A tip: First, measure precisely at which corners or sides the shelf tilts in order to target the gaps or spaces that need filling. Small wooden wedges are adjustable but can shift over time. For a more secure solution, adjustable furniture feet or custom-made pads are often the most stable option.

Thanks for the tip, that sounds good! One question: Are these adjustable feet easy to install without damaging the shelf? I don’t want to leave holes or permanent marks on the KALLAX in case I want to remove the feet later.

Small wooden wedges or thin felt pads could also help; the important thing is that they are non-slip.

I could easily make wooden wedges myself if they don’t slip. I might have to experiment a bit though. Could you please explain briefly how to best fix them so they don’t slip, or if there are ready-made products for this? Thanks in advance!

Adjustable furniture feet can often be easily screwed onto the underside. IKEA shelves usually have enough space in the edge to insert small furniture glides without visible damage.

Alternatively, self-adhesive felt pads or rubber pads are perfect for leveling out small gaps. They simply slide under the shelf legs.
