Hello everyone,
I am currently facing the challenge of assembling my new KALLAX shelves from IKEA, and honestly, I find the instructions quite confusing. Although the steps are numbered, there are no clear indications on how certain parts should be oriented or which screws should be used for each step. I’m particularly uncertain about the area with the connecting fittings – there are only symbols shown, without detailed descriptions.
Does anyone have experience assembling the KALLAX and could provide a more detailed explanation on how to properly join the individual parts? I would also like to know if there are any essential tools or common mistakes to avoid.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Hello bekedeo,
I completely understand your issue; the KALLAX manual can be a bit brief and isn’t always intuitive for DIY beginners. Overall, I recommend first organizing all the parts carefully and sorting the screws by type—this will help avoid any mix-ups.
Regarding the connectors: these are usually dowels and connector screws. Make sure the dowels fit properly into their designated holes, as improper placement can compromise the stability of the structure. Most problems occur when parts are assembled upside down or screws aren’t driven in deep enough.
Another tip: always check before each step that the sides, edges, and especially the drill holes align correctly. Orientation is crucial, particularly for the side panels and shelves.
What tools are you currently using? For KALLAX, usually a cordless drill with a Phillips bit is enough, along with a hammer for the dowels. A square is also very helpful to keep the corners perfectly right-angled during assembly.
Could you describe exactly which step you are finding unclear? Then I can help you more specifically.

The part of the instructions showing the connectors (those small metal brackets) is confusing me. More precisely, the section where they are supposed to be screwed into the inner side of the side panels. The arrows in the manual indicate to attach them, but it’s not clear whether the small tab should point up or down. It’s also unclear if the screw should go all the way through the pre-drilled hole or just be tightened lightly.
I’m worried that I might assemble these parts incorrectly and that the shelf won’t be stable afterwards. If I get this wrong, I’ll probably have to disassemble everything again, which I would like to avoid!
Could you clarify the correct orientation and how tightly the screws should be fastened?
Additionally, it would be helpful to know if there are any issues when placing the shelf on carpeted flooring, or if there is anything particular to watch out for in that case.

whether the screw should go completely through the pilot hole or just be lightly tightened.Only tighten lightly at this stage; everything will be fully tightened during the final assembly step.
Carpet flooring is not an issue, just make sure the shelf stands firmly. You might want to place small felt pads underneath.

I’m afraid I’m installing these parts incorrectly and that the shelf won’t be stable later on.I know that feeling all too well! When I assembled my KALLAX for the first time, I was uncertain about that exact part too. It’s really frustrating when the instructions don’t clearly explain how exactly the tabs should be aligned.
Back then, I first loosely assembled everything and then gradually tightened the screws. That way, you can still make adjustments if something doesn’t fit without losing too much time disassembling.
Don’t worry too much; the shelf is quite sturdy even if you make a few mistakes at the beginning. With patience, it will definitely work out! 🙂
If you want, I can explain my approach in more detail.
