Hello everyone,

I have a white Kallax shelving unit from IKEA that has unfortunately yellowed over time. The typical plastic material seems to have discolored, probably due to UV exposure or general aging. Now I’m wondering how to remove this yellowing as effectively and gently as possible, without damaging the surface.

Regular cleaning with ordinary dish soap hasn’t shown any visible effect so far. I’m unsure if chemical agents like bleach or special polish might damage the plastic. Does anyone have experience with cleaning methods that can neutralize or at least significantly reduce yellowing on white plastic furniture?

It’s also important to me that the treatment does not affect the gloss or surface texture of the Kallax, as it is in a living space and shouldn’t look damaged.

I’d appreciate any tips, including what to avoid – thanks in advance!

If the yellowing is not too severe, a damp cloth with a little baking soda as a mild abrasive often helps. Alternatively, you can use isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) to remove superficial discoloration. However, I would avoid chemical bleaches, as they can damage the plastic.

The yellowing process in white plastic furniture, such as the Kallax shelf, is primarily caused by oxidation and UV exposure. Surface dirt is usually easier to remove than actual yellowing within the material.

A well-established method is called "retrobrighting." This involves using a mixture of hydrogen peroxide (about 10-12%) combined with UV light to bleach the oxidized compounds in the plastic. Important: This method requires careful handling and safety precautions, as concentrated hydrogen peroxide can be irritating.

If the effort seems too high, special plastic cleaners and polishing pastes are options to restore gloss and reduce minor discoloration. I do not recommend acetone or strong alcohols because they can damage the surface.

It is also important to use a soft cloth for all cleaning, as Kallax surfaces can scratch easily.

Hello Gigustave,

I would like to provide you with a step-by-step guide that has proven effective for tackling yellowed plastic without damaging it:

1. Preparation: Clean the shelf thoroughly with warm water and mild dish soap to remove any surface dirt particles.

2. Select a test area: Choose an inconspicuous corner of the Kallax shelf. Test all further treatments there first to check how the surface reacts.

3. Gentle cleaning: Apply a baking soda paste (baking soda mixed with a little water) using a sponge or cloth. Rub gently, not too hard, to avoid scratches.

4. Hydrogen peroxide treatment (optional): If the yellowing is stubborn, you can apply a 3% hydrogen peroxide gel (available at pharmacies) and let it sit for about 30 minutes, preferably in direct sunlight or under a UV lamp. Then wipe it off well.

5. Aftercare: Use a special plastic care product (e.g., silicone spray or plastic polishing paste) to restore an even and glossy surface.

6. Let dry: Allow for complete air drying.

Important: Avoid aggressive bleach or solvents that can damage the plastic material and make the surface dull or cracked.

In summary: A gentle cleaning followed by targeted treatment with low-concentration hydrogen peroxide has shown good results in many cases.
