Hello everyone, I am planning to use my Kallax shelf in the home office as a printer stand and wonder if the weight of printers and possibly some accessories (like paper, small scanners, or a cable box) might negatively affect the shelf. Specifically: Does anyone have experience with how much weight a 4-compartment Kallax unit can hold when supporting a printer and accessories? I am familiar with the specifications from IKEA, but practical experience would be very valuable to me. Especially in a home office, stable and durable solutions are often needed, and I want to avoid any warping or damage. Thanks in advance for your opinions!

A single Kallax compartment typically holds up to 13 kilograms (29 pounds). A printer with accessories should therefore not be a problem, as long as the weight is not significantly exceeded.

The official information from IKEA states that the Kallax shelf has a maximum load capacity of 13 kg (29 lbs) per compartment. Printer weights vary greatly – smaller inkjet printers usually weigh between 3 and 8 kg (7 to 18 lbs), while larger laser printers can weigh up to 15 kg (33 lbs). Additionally, paper supplies and possibly scanners should be considered, as they increase the overall weight.

The shelves are made of particleboard with a melamine coating, and their stability is ensured by the surrounding edging and the Kallax design. Prolonged loads near or above the maximum limit can cause sagging. My advice: if using a heavy printer, reinforcing the shelf or placing a support board inside the compartment would be a good idea to prevent pressure marks.

I completely understand your concern, ramau. Especially when you work from home a lot, having a sturdy workspace is important. I once had a similar setup with a larger printer in a Kallax unit. At first, I was also worried about the weight. However, it worked well with no warping or damage so far. Still, I would recommend not pushing the load too much. It’s better to place a little less on it or store heavy items at the bottom to reduce stress on the shelf.

At least a clear, precise figure! 😄

I’ve used my Kallax in the office as a printer shelf, but here’s a simple rule of thumb: better not to exceed the limit than to end up with a sagging shelf. Printers plus a few packs of paper are usually fine, and you know your equipment best. If you notice any creaking or bending, you can still consider adding proper support. Good luck – take it easy, it should work out just fine! 🙂

An additional consideration: If it is a laser printer that is not only heavy but also generates significant heat, caution should be exercised with direct contact to the particleboard. The heat generated during continuous use can affect the coating or even damage the material. A heat-resistant mat or a small gap between the printer and the shelf board can be useful in this case.
