ᐅ Kallax Shelving in the Children's Room – Is It Durable Enough for Rough Play?

Hello everyone,
I am currently redesigning the children's room and considering using an IKEA Kallax shelf unit for storage. However, I have some concerns about its durability: How well does a Kallax shelf actually hold up to typical rough play by children?
In everyday use, kids might pull on it, jump near it, or lean against it. I am especially interested in whether the shelf is stable enough to withstand such stresses over time, or if it would be better to choose another option.
Does anyone have experience with Kallax shelves in a children's room, particularly regarding stability and safety? I would appreciate any feedback!

Sometimes I wonder if we worry more about furniture than about our children 😉
Honestly: A Kallax shelf will probably hold up to little jumpers if it’s properly installed. If the kids regularly climb on it or use it as a springboard, maybe it’s the parenting that should be reconsidered rather than the shelf.

if you want to use the Kallax, I highly recommend securing the shelf to the wall with the included mounting hardware.

A small addition: When using Kallax shelves for the children's room, placing small non-slip mats on the shelves or inside the compartments can help prevent boxes or toys from sliding around – this makes handling easier and prevents items from tipping over.
Additionally, I find it sensible, especially in households with very active children, to regularly check the furniture for any damage and tighten screws or fasteners as needed. This ensures the stability remains secure over time.

I have to say, a bit of roughhousing is definitely okay – and here in the forum, you’ll already find great tips: wall mounting, placing heavy items lower down, no climbing on Kallax units. That’s usually more than enough.
You can’t always be too serious, otherwise the kids’ room ends up like a storage cellar for toys 😉. The little ones are allowed to be a bit wild!
