Hello everyone, I have a Kallax shelving unit in my older home, placed directly against a wall that doesn’t seem to be perfectly even. I’ve noticed that the shelf constantly makes creaking noises for no obvious reason – it’s a quiet but continuous creak that I hear when I move, when the air temperature changes, or when I touch the shelf.
My question is: Can a Kallax shelf in an older house basically cause such noises because older homes often have uneven walls, which can create stress on the furniture? And if so, how can I investigate this and eliminate these creaking sounds?
Does anyone have experience with Kallax shelves in older apartments and know about these kinds of issues? I would appreciate any tips on how to stabilize the shelf without having to completely rebuild or remove it.

I know this problem all too well! 🙂 When a shelf creaks, it feels like a bad sign ;-) But don’t worry, there are solutions.
In my old building, the Kallax always creaked until I carefully checked all the contact points between the shelf and the wall/floor. In the end, I slightly loosened all the connections with mounted screws and then tightened them again – that worked perfectly!
Of course, sometimes it also helps to completely realign the shelf or use small felt pads, but most importantly: be patient!! 🙂 It’s worth it.

I recommend specifically checking the screws and connections and gently tightening them.I agree with this, especially with IKEA furniture like Kallax, where a slight readjustment of the screws is often necessary.
Connections that are too tight can also cause stress and creaking. Therefore, it is better to slightly loosen them, then move all parts and realign.
I also have a similar Kallax shelf in my older building. Simply sealing the gap between the back panel and the shelf helped in some spots to prevent any rubbing contact.
Sometimes small things, like a piece of cardboard or self-adhesive dampers, can work wonders against creaking.
