ᐅ Kallax feet get in the way when vacuuming.

Hello everyone,

I have had a Kallax shelving unit from Ikea for some time now, and I’m facing the problem that the feet of the unit make it quite difficult to vacuum underneath. In particular, the relatively tall and wide legs prevent me from easily sliding the vacuum nozzle underneath, which becomes especially problematic with vacuums that have large floor heads or limited maneuverability. However, it is important to remove dust buildup there, especially if you have pets or allergies.

Can anyone recommend practical and lasting solutions to fix this issue without having to completely modify the shelving unit? For example, adapters, different feet, or pads that would allow the vacuum to pass more easily? So far, I have been using an upright vacuum with a standard floor attachment.

I look forward to any tips and experiences!

Oh, it’s great to see this topic generating so much discussion! 🙂

I had the same issue with my Kallax and simply swapped the feet for furniture casters with locking brakes. It works perfectly!

The shelf is now very flexible, and I can easily vacuum without moving it. When I’m done, I just lock the wheels, and everything stays firmly in place. Installing them was really simple because the casters fit perfectly. So grab a screwdriver and get started — it really makes cleaning much easier!

Great tip, thanks!

I would just add that you should check the floor before screwing anything on. Some floors are sensitive to casters and can get scratched. Felt pads under the casters work really well here.

And if you don’t want casters at all, a vacuum cleaner attachment with a long handle might be worth considering—it often fits well under tightly spaced furniture.

You can also simply use a narrow paintbrush or a dusting brush to remove dust from under the shelf. This saves you from having to dismantle it and dealing with issues related to casters.
