Hello everyone,
I have had a Kallax shelving unit from Ikea for some time now, and I’m facing the problem that the feet of the unit make it quite difficult to vacuum underneath. In particular, the relatively tall and wide legs prevent me from easily sliding the vacuum nozzle underneath, which becomes especially problematic with vacuums that have large floor heads or limited maneuverability. However, it is important to remove dust buildup there, especially if you have pets or allergies.
Can anyone recommend practical and lasting solutions to fix this issue without having to completely modify the shelving unit? For example, adapters, different feet, or pads that would allow the vacuum to pass more easily? So far, I have been using an upright vacuum with a standard floor attachment.
I look forward to any tips and experiences!

Hello fu-do,
I can understand how annoying that can be. The Kallax feet are indeed quite bulky and can make vacuuming underneath difficult. One option is to get so-called "furniture feet with wheels" and replace the regular feet with those. This way, the shelf can be easily moved while vacuuming.
Alternatively, you can attach a flat "vacuum nozzle with hose" under the shelf, which allows you to reach better underneath the feet. Some users also recommend removing the feet and placing the shelf directly on small felt pads, which reduces the clearance but makes vacuuming easier.
I’m happy to provide more details or sources if that helps :-)

Haha, I know exactly what you mean—those Kallax feet are like little obstacles in the cleaning race 😄
I would also recommend replacing the feet with casters. Alternatively, you could try using a vacuum attachment that’s especially flat. Sometimes, simply wiping between the feet regularly with a damp cloth helps when vacuuming isn’t ideal. This way, at least the coarser dust is removed before it settles. After all, you don’t want dust under the shelf to create its own little ecosystem 😉

I would like to point out critically that this issue is not limited to Kallax legs but generally applies to furniture with relatively thick or tall legs. Choosing vacuum cleaner attachments with narrow or flexible nozzles seems to me the most sensible solution, as modifying the furniture can often affect its style or stability.
For me, this would be an important consideration before proceeding. What do you think?

I find the idea of adding casters practical, but could this make the shelf unstable or cause it to slide?

The idea of casters sounds interesting, but I have concerns about stability. The shelf is located in a high-traffic area, and I don’t want it to slide or even tip over while vacuuming.

Wouldn’t the shelf become unstable or slide around because of that? That’s exactly my concern. Are there perhaps glides or furniture pads with integrated brakes or light casters with locking mechanisms? That way, vacuuming could be flexible, and the shelf would stay securely in place.
Has anyone tried something like this? I’m open to practical experiences.
