ᐅ KALLAX feels unstable when fully loaded – should I reinforce it?

Hello everyone, I have a KALLAX shelf that I really like and that fits well with the design of my living room. However, when it is fully loaded with books and some heavy decorative items, it feels somewhat unstable. It wobbles slightly, especially when I walk past it or touch it. I am wondering if it makes sense to reinforce the shelf or add additional supports to improve its stability when fully loaded. I suspect that the original joints and dowels no longer secure the weight optimally after all these years. Does anyone have experience with this issue—whether adding brackets or angle braces afterward is recommended, or if it’s better to change the location of the unit? Thanks for your advice!

So, I once completely overloaded my KALLAX, and the wobbling was really annoying – honestly, adding a few brackets inside and especially some care for the back panel worked wonders! 🙂

Also: Place the shelf on a level surface, that makes a big difference. And if you screw it to the wall, you’ll feel much safer immediately. It’s really not rocket science, more like a small DIY project that pays off a lot!

I think it’s important not only to focus on stability but also on comfort with the furniture. Wobbling can be psychologically disturbing, especially if you spend a lot of time in the room.

Maybe you can distribute the weight a bit more across several shelves or store heavy items at the bottom. That can help a lot. If you then decide to reinforce it, that’s perfect – playing it safe is never a bad idea.

First, check all connections and screws to make sure they are tight.

I did that yesterday, and indeed a few wall plugs were loose. Fixing that alone significantly reduced the wobbling. I also plan to attach brackets to the corners.

Alternatively, an additional wall attachment using screws and wall plugs is often enough.

I will try that as well since the shelf is already positioned against the wall. Thanks very much for the good advice! If anyone has specific bracket recommendations or screw sizes, please share.

Angles of 40x40 mm (1.6x1.6 inches) with short screws (max. 15 mm (0.6 inches)) work well. It is important not to drill too deep and not to overload the shelf. Wall anchors should be chosen according to the type of wall.
