Hello everyone,

I decided to upgrade my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit with a glass top to create a smooth, elegant surface and give the furniture a more premium look. The problem I’m facing is that small crumbs and dust often accumulate between the glass and the shelves below, which are difficult to remove because the glass sits flush. I’m looking to find out if anyone has tips on how to prevent or solve this issue without affecting the appearance or stability. Does anyone have experience with KALLAX plus a glass top? Are there special spacers or tricks that could help, or is this an unavoidable problem with this combination? Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice!

This is actually a common issue when placing a glass top directly onto a KALLAX unit. The shelf doesn’t have its own work surface; the glass simply rests on the frame edges. This creates a tiny gap where dust, crumbs, or small particles can collect—usually with no easy access for cleaning.

If you place the glass completely flat, it looks neat, but there’s no clearance underneath to properly clean. My suggestion: use small silicone or rubber bumpers (those little self-adhesive pads) attached to the four corners of the glass. This allows minimal air circulation and makes it easier to vacuum out crumbs with a slightly curved vacuum cleaner attachment.

If you like, I can also explain how to modify the KALLAX module slightly to create more clearance without losing stability. It’s also important that the glass thickness doesn’t go below 4mm (0.16 inches) to maintain sufficient load-bearing capacity.

One more question: How large is your KALLAX (number of compartments)? And did you have the glass custom-made or use a standard size from a hardware store?

Thanks for the great tip, I hadn’t considered spacers before. My panel is 6 mm (0.24 inches) thick and I have a 4x4 KALLAX, so with 16 compartments – the panel fits perfectly on top, it was cut specifically for the shelf.

I’d like to avoid modifying the shelf itself, since it fits very well in the living room as it is. I’m mainly looking for a simple solution to prevent the crumb problem. I’ll definitely check out those small bumpers.

Are there perhaps protective films or other materials I could place between the glass and the shelf to stop crumbs without creating too much distance? Or would that be counterproductive? I also have some books and decorations on top of the glass panel, so the stability definitely needs to be maintained.

Hello!
I think the idea of combining the glass panel with a protective film is quite sensible. For example, a transparent, non-slip silicone mat, which you can find in most household goods stores. You simply place it between the glass and the shelf.

This has two advantages: the panel sits more securely and is less likely to slip, and small particles can’t get in as easily. Of course, this doesn’t guarantee 100% protection from crumbs, but it does significantly reduce the gap.

It also looks nice, since it remains transparent and keeps the panel firmly in place. Plus, you can easily lift the mat for cleaning.

Sounds like a good, simple solution. Maybe it will help in your situation 🙂

I would definitely recommend small spacers that slightly lift the glass. They are very easy to install and leave enough air gap to remove dust.

Additionally, you could try to clean the surface regularly with a small hand brush or vacuum cleaner to prevent too much buildup.

This is actually a practical approach. I would like to deepen and structure the discussion a bit further:

1. Problem: Dust and crumbs accumulate under a heavy glass plate that rests directly on the shelf.
2. Cause: The glass plate seals the surface, leaving no gap for air circulation and cleaning, so dirt simply remains and builds up.
3. Possible solutions:
- Attach small spacers (e.g., silicone bumps) at the corners to slightly lift the glass.
- Use a non-slip silicone mat as a separating layer, which also prevents dirt particles from accumulating directly on the surface.
- Mechanical modification: If you don’t want to modify any components, it is advisable to glue the small spacers in place.

Application tip: Use a slightly damp microfiber cloth and possibly the vacuum cleaner attachment for hard-to-reach areas. Air circulation significantly improves the condition.

I hope this summary helps you find the best solution.
