Hello everyone,
I noticed that the edges of the shelves and side panels of my IKEA Kallax unit have become visibly worn down due to frequent cleaning. This is the typical Kallax with the melamine-coated surface. My question is: Is this a common material issue with Kallax, where the edges are more prone to wear from cleaning products and wiping, or am I possibly doing something wrong when maintaining it?
I usually clean it with a damp microfiber cloth and a mild all-purpose cleaner. Still, the edges in some spots seem a bit rougher, and the color/coating is slightly peeling off.
What cleaning methods do you use to prevent this kind of wear? Are there any special care products or techniques that have proven effective over time?
I’m looking forward to your experiences and tips, especially if this problem is known or if I might have just gotten a defective piece. Thanks!

Finally, my question: Are the affected edges subjected to heavy mechanical stress (e.g., doors frequently opened, objects bumping into them), or is the wear more related to cleaning? In my case, the mechanical stress is actually quite low. It is a shelf standing against a wall, so there are no doors to open, just occasional bumps when vacuuming or similar. I now suspect that frequent damp cleaning and wiping with too much moisture are the reasons for the initial damage.
This also explains why the damage occurs mainly at the edges and rarely on the larger surfaces. Thanks for the tips about edge protection and furniture wax—I will definitely give them a try.
I’m familiar with this issue as well; after a few years, the edges of my shelves also became rough and slightly worn.
At first, I felt a bit frustrated because I usually clean carefully. By now, I see it more as a natural sign of life for the furniture – a sign that it’s being used and cared for, but also showing some wear over time.
What helps is actually reducing the moisture when cleaning and occasionally applying a drop of furniture wax to the edges. It gives the feeling that the shelf has been refreshed a little.
Very important, though: don’t treat it too often, as common waxes can attract dust. If you’re still unsure, I’d recommend testing it first on an inconspicuous spot.
If it reassures you: this is not a defect, but rather normal wear and tear. 🙂
