Hello everyone,
I have an issue with my Ikea Kallax shelf drawers that has me a bit confused. The drawers keep sliding all the way out when I pull them too far. Apparently, I either missed or left out the small plastic stoppers that secure the drawers during assembly.
My specific question is:
Is it really necessary to use these plastic stoppers, or are there simpler solutions to prevent the drawers from coming out completely?
I’m mainly looking for reliable alternatives or tips on how to solve this problem permanently without having to disassemble the entire shelf. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

A truly safe and reliable installation is only possible after the drawers are fully assembled.I agree completely. It’s definitely worth doing it properly, even if it requires some effort. Safety first 🙂
I would add that an overly full drawer can actually increase the risk of it coming out, even when there are stops in place. The weight on the runners can cause the stoppers to give way or break.
For a long-term solution, it is important to keep the maximum load of the drawers in mind. According to the Ikea manual, this is about 10 kg (22 lbs) per drawer. Exceeding this limit can damage the runners.

Is there a way to install the stoppers even months after purchase without having to remove the entire shelving unit? No, you need to take the drawers out to install the stoppers properly. Installing stoppers while everything is still assembled is not an option.
That helps me a lot, thank you.
I think I'll just do it properly and empty the drawers.
Do you know if there are also stainless steel or metal drawer slides without stops for the Kallax that prevent the drawers from falling out, or are these small plastic parts mandatory everywhere?

The Kallax insert typically uses simple plastic runners with stoppers. While other furniture items may have metal drawer slides, this is not standard for Kallax.
If you require higher safety and quality standards, you should consider alternative systems with full-extension metal slides. These feature integrated stoppers and soft-close mechanisms.
There are no official metal slides with integrated stoppers available for Kallax itself. Therefore, you are limited to the supplied stoppers or other retrofit options.
