ᐅ KALLAX drawers tend to fall out – are there better inserts available?

nathangoHello everyone,
A few months ago, I bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and I’m using the matching drawer inserts that simply slide in. However, I have the problem that these drawers tend to fall out quite easily when pulled out fully or when quickly removing something. This is especially annoying with heavier items, as they end up on the floor or you have to hold them with both hands to prevent that.
Do you have any recommendations for better inserts or alternatives that hold more securely but are still easy to install? I’d prefer not to switch completely to other storage systems, as the KALLAX fits my space perfectly, but the standard drawers just aren’t ideal.
I appreciate any tips, especially solutions that can be implemented without much effort.
Thanks in advance!

retrofitting small plastic stoppersI can confirm this! I got these stoppers that you attach to the side of the drawer – they work perfectly! Especially with KALLAX, it otherwise feels like the drawers have a mind of their own and want to run away 😉.
Also, if you’re looking for something a bit more creative, you can pad the simple inserts on the sides with foam rubber or felt. This cushions against falling out and looks nice, too 🙂

valentino31 Jul 2020 09:17To optimize the KALLAX drawers, I recommend the following steps:
1. Install mechanical stoppers: Although IKEA does not offer specific stoppers for KALLAX, standard plastic drawer stoppers commonly used for furniture drawers are compatible.
2. Use washers or self-adhesive rubber pads on the sides of the drawers: This increases friction and helps prevent drawers from unintentionally sliding out.
3. Consider alternative inserts: Suppliers such as Amazon or specialized furniture stores offer custom-made inserts with integrated guide rails, which are more stable than the original inserts.
4. Finally, installing simple metal drawer slides (also known as drawer runners) can help, as they mechanically prevent drawers from falling out.
Important: The choice depends largely on how much effort you want to invest and how much weight the drawers regularly need to carry.

I completely understand your concern. KALLAX drawers often have the issue that they lack a locking mechanism, which can cause them to fall out easily.
A simple and effective solution I use myself is installing small, discreet metal rails or side guides. These are inexpensive, available on Amazon or at hardware stores, and can be mounted on the shelf and drawer with just a few screws. This way, you can completely prevent them from falling out.
If you’re not very handy, there are also third-party models specifically designed for KALLAX that come with sturdy compartments or even soft-close features. They tend to be more expensive, but are very durable.
If you like, I can recommend a few examples. It’s important to pay attention to the measurements to ensure everything fits.
I’m happy to help further if you can provide more details about the type of drawers you use and the typical weight of the items.
