Hello everyone,
A few weeks ago, I bought a KALLAX shelving unit with doors. Unfortunately, I have now noticed that the paint is chipping off along the edges of some of the doors. It seems like the surface is not very durable.
My question is: Should I file a complaint and insist on a replacement, or would it make more sense to touch up and repair the chipped areas myself?
I would like to hear about your experiences with situations like this. Is the customer service accommodating? How long does such a complaint usually take? And how well does a self-repair actually hold up?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

I understand the concern about the effort involved. But I just read that the doors are painted, not just veneered. That makes repairs a bit more complicated, I think.
Does anyone have specific tips on how to best repaint KALLAX doors without it looking unprofessional? What type of paint is suitable?
And how can you achieve clean transitions?

Regarding repainting KALLAX doors, I can share the following:
1. KALLAX doors are usually coated with a white lacquer on an MDF base, not with a film. This makes painting somewhat easier.
2. For a good and seamless finish, a matte acrylic paint in white works well. Water-based paint is best, as it has low odor and dries quickly.
3. Proper preparation is important: lightly sand any chipped areas with fine sandpaper (e.g., grit 240), then clean with a lint-free cloth.
4. When painting, apply thin layers using a high-quality foam brush or small flat brush.
5. For a clean transition: carefully blend the edges of the repair area, and if needed, sand lightly between coats with very fine sandpaper.
It will never look completely professional at home, but with some patience, you can achieve good results.

Thanks to everyone for the quick support so far!
This morning, I decided to start with the complaint first. It’s good to know that you don’t necessarily have to return the entire piece of furniture for that. I will take the doors to the store and see how IKEA responds.
In the meantime, I have already noted down suitable paint in case I need to do the repairs myself.
If anyone has tips on how to best word a complaint, please feel free to share!
