ᐅ KALLAX doors open when vibrated – how can this be prevented?

Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit – the doors tend to open by themselves with vibrations or minor jolts, which can cause the contents to fall out or simply look untidy. Especially when moving nearby or if someone lightly shakes the furniture, the doors swing open even though they are supposed to be closed.

My question to the community is: What practical solutions or tips do you know to prevent KALLAX doors from opening on their own due to such vibrations? Ideally, without having to make major modifications to the furniture or the doors.

Thank you in advance for any advice and shared experiences!

Hello LEJEPE,

To better understand and effectively resolve the issue of KALLAX doors opening by themselves due to vibrations, we should consider a few details. KALLAX doors usually have small magnetic catches, which sometimes do not provide enough holding force, especially in environments prone to shaking.

My suggested step-by-step approach is as follows:

1. Check the magnetic catches: Test the strength by pressing and pulling to see how strong the magnetic force actually is. If it weakens, replace them with stronger neodymium magnets, which you can find in appropriate sizes at hardware stores or online.

2. Inspect the hinges: Angles and screws may be slightly loose or misaligned. Adjusting the doors is essential so the magnet aligns precisely with its counterpart.

3. Leveling the floor and using anti-slip pads: If the shelving unit stands on a slightly uneven floor, vibrations can be amplified. Self-adhesive felt or rubber pads under the feet help counteract these movements.

4. Installing door closers or snap catches: These are designed specifically for lightweight doors and provide extra hold without modifying the furniture.

5. Carefully attaching rubber buffers or soft seals on the inside edges of the doors: This dampens friction and rattling noises and can prevent the doors from opening due to small vibrations.

A question for you: How is the floor beneath the shelving unit? Are there stronger vibrations, for example from nearby washing machines or loud noises? And how often does the door actually open? Only when passing by normally or even when coughing? These details help to find the best solution.

Best regards!

In summary:

- The cause of the KALLAX doors opening is usually due to weak magnetic catches or suboptimal door alignment.

- Improving the magnetic force by using stronger magnets or replacing them with neodymium types noticeably increases the holding power.

- Correctly aligning the doors increases the magnet’s contact surface and helps prevent the issue.

- Rubber buffers or soft seals can mechanically prevent the doors from opening due to minor vibrations.

- Underlying factors such as an unstable base or vibrations should also be considered.

When installing additional fittings (catches, etc.), the material quality and the avoidance of damage must be checked. Any modifications should only be made if they do not compromise the value of the furniture.
