Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Kallax shelving unit from IKEA along with the matching doors. However, I have a problem: the doors only close with significant force. They seem to catch or stick, so I often worry about breaking something or damaging the hinges.
My question to the community is: what could cause Kallax doors to only close with such difficulty? Is it often due to the installation, the hinges, warped door panels, or are there other common issues to consider? I have already checked all the screws but couldn’t find any obvious reason so far.
Has anyone had similar experiences or maybe even a precise solution to this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Peonau,
I generally agree with MOMIRA and would like to approach the problem more systematically.
1. Check hinge position: Kallax doors usually come with simple pivot hinges that can be finely adjusted. When you hold the doors against the shelving unit, you can see if they really hang straight.
2. Warped doors: Wood or MDF can swell or warp slightly depending on humidity. This often becomes apparent when doors stick at one corner.
3. Adjust installation: Try loosening the hinge screws slightly, position the door, then tighten the screws again. This allows for small adjustments.
4. Lubricate hinges: Sometimes a bit of silicone spray or a drop of oil on the hinges helps reduce resistance.
Summary: The issue is usually a combination of slight door deformation plus incorrect hinge adjustment. With some patience and step-by-step adjustments, this can often be resolved.
If the door is severely warped, replacement is usually the only solution, as permanent stress will remain otherwise.

Most of the time, it’s due to incorrectly adjusted hinges. That’s a good initial tip, but with Kallax doors, this often isn’t enough.
The reason why many users can only close the doors with force usually lies deeper in the mechanics and material of the Kallax system:
1. Stop and tolerances: The doors do not hang freely on standard hinges but are mounted to the shelving unit using concealed hinges with tight tolerances. The Kallax unit itself is a frame carcass with door panels made of particleboard or MDF with a coating, which can be relatively stiff to operate.
2. Frame construction: The doors are comparatively thin and don’t offer the stability of solid wood door systems. Even small deformations or incorrect installation can cause binding.
3. Assembly instructions: IKEA advises mounting the doors fully on the unit first and then gradually tightening the screws to ensure even positioning. If the screws are tightened too much right away without checking the alignment, the doors can be hard to move later.
4. Door panel and humidity: Since the door panels are often painted or foil-covered, the material reacts more strongly to humidity, causing slight warping. This is quite normal after a few weeks with new furniture.
5. Guaranteed clearance: A common mistake is that the gap between the door and the unit is too narrow. IKEA provides tolerances that must be observed to allow the doors to open and close smoothly.
Important: Have you already readjusted the doors, or did you tighten the screws firmly without checking? Did you check whether the edges or hinges are rubbing somewhere on the carcass when closing?
In conclusion, I recommend carefully unmounting the doors, realigning the hinges, then remounting everything with reduced screw tightness and adjusting step by step.
If that doesn’t help, please check the door panel itself for possible warping, as otherwise permanent distortion can occur. If available, you can also use the adjustment screws on the hinges for height, lateral shift, and closing pressure.
Best regards!
