ᐅ Kallax doors no longer close properly after wallpapering – what can help?

Hello everyone,

I recently redecorated my Kallax shelf from Ikea by applying new wallpaper. I removed the doors and the back panel and then wallpapered the area behind the shelf. Now the problem is that the doors no longer close properly. They either stick or don’t close flush anymore. The shelf remains in the same place, and the assembly was done exactly as before.

Does anyone have experience with this issue or tips on how to get the doors to close properly again after wallpapering?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

As an additional note, adhesive residues from wallpapering may remain on the contact surfaces of the doors or hinges on the back panel. This can make closing more difficult.

Therefore, it is advisable to carefully clean the bearing surfaces of the hinges and the backside of the doors with a damp cloth, ideally using only water and no harsh cleaners, to avoid further damage to shrinking or swollen surfaces.

Furthermore, the carcass material (particleboard) is very sensitive to moisture. If it warps, the only solution is mechanical reworking or replacing the back panel, as toril already mentioned.

Interesting point, but isn’t that a bit too cautious? I mean, the Kallax shelf isn’t exactly a high-end piece of furniture that needs to be handled like an antique artwork.

You could simply do some mechanical adjustment to the doors: sanding the edges, leaving a bit more clearance, and that’s it. This way, some avoid a "micro-war" with their furniture and solve the problem pragmatically.

So the question is: how much effort do you put in when a simple piece of furniture sticks? My advice: start by using sandpaper and a bit of patience rather than making complicated technical adjustments.

Sanding can definitely help, but it should be done carefully. Removing too much material will only increase the clearance and compromise the fit.

At the same time, the waiting for complete drying—which I regard critically—is often underestimated. Those who install the doors too soon, either due to installation schedule or shortly after delivery, risk causing more serious damage to the furniture over time.

My suggestion: first carefully identify the root causes, then take targeted action. Pragmatic rework is appropriate, but without a thorough analysis, errors can be made worse.

In summary, my advice would be:

- Be patient with the drying of the furniture part
- Thoroughly check the hinge adjustment
- Inspect the back panel and all contact points
- Replace or reinforce the back panel if necessary

If the doors still do not fit after several days, carefully reworking (such as sanding the edges) can be a sensible final step.

Keep in mind: The Kallax material is sensitive to moisture – following the correct technical procedures will prevent long-term problems.

Good luck with the repairs!
