Hello everyone,
I have a problem with the doors on my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit—they keep falling off the hinges. The attachment doesn’t seem sturdy enough, especially when the doors are opened frequently or heavier items are stored behind them. My question is: what options are available to secure the KALLAX doors more reliably and permanently so they no longer fall off? Are there stronger hinges, alternative fixing methods, or proven tips you could recommend?
I’d rather not rebuild the entire unit, but a stable solution is important. Thanks for your ideas and experiences!

How exactly are your doors installed? Are they just hung in place, or are the hinges fully screwed in?This is actually a crucial question. In many KALLAX shelving units, the doors are only hung in and not fully screwed in. This leads to instability.
If possible, fully screw the doors securely into the cabinet, even if it means modifying the back panel slightly. This significantly increases the load-bearing capacity.
I also recommend paying attention to the cam lock adjustment during installation to ensure the weight is well distributed.

I replaced them with more robust metal hinges – these are usually available from third-party suppliers and are much more durable. Thanks for the tips, that already sounds quite helpful!
To add: Currently, the doors are attached with the original plastic snap hinges, and yes, they are just hung in, not screwed in. That might explain why they become loose.

And on top of that: Is it possible to secure the doors without drilling into the side panels (since that would affect their appearance)?
I would recommend, in addition to switching to higher-quality hinges, also using small self-adhesive magnetic catches.
These additionally hold the doors closed and prevent them from slipping open too quickly.
If you don’t want to drill holes in the side panels, these magnetic aids are really a good option.
Furthermore, small plastic or rubber bumpers can help reduce the stress on the hinge mounts.

If the appearance is important to you, you can also try metal hinges used in furniture making, which are almost identical but much more durable.
These can be easily ordered from online retailers specializing in furniture fittings. They usually fit the existing hole spacing! 🙂
