ᐅ Kallax doors installed too deep – how to remove them again?

Hello everyone, I recently fitted an Ikea Kallax shelving unit with matching doors. However, I have noticed that the doors were mounted too deep, meaning they sit much lower in the frame and do not align flush with the top edge of the shelving unit. This not only looks unattractive but also makes operation more difficult because they catch on the bottom edge.

Now my actual question: How can I remove the doors from a Kallax unit if they have been installed too deep? Do I need to dismantle the hinges, or is there a trick to take the doors off without damaging the entire structure? I would really appreciate any tips, experiences, or a step-by-step guide!

I wonder if the doors might also be mounted using mounting rails

Thank you for the detailed response! The doors are attached directly to the visible clip hinges on the cabinet; I don’t see any separate mounting rails. The screws are also accessible.

The idea that I might need to fully loosen the hinges to remove the doors is interesting. I was hoping they could be lifted or unclipped without loosening any screws.

Has anyone had experience with removing doors without unscrewing, even if the doors are mounted quite deep? Or does this usually cause the door to get stuck?

Usually, these hinges are designed for removal without disassembly. The door is lifted off the hinge base when raised. However, if the door is mounted too low, it can make this difficult because the angle for lifting it off doesn’t work properly.

If the door is really mounted too low and has very little play, I recommend using a screwdriver to carefully lift and pry the door off. This only works if the plastic components are not damaged.

Lift the door slightly, tilt it briefly, and carefully pull it forward. If it gets stuck, it’s better to loosen the screws. This way, you avoid damage.

Alternatively: Unscrew the hinges on the door side, then remove the door. Simple and effective.

A possible guide for removing the doors:

1. Open the door fully and hold it firmly.

2. Gently insert a flat screwdriver under the top edge of the door to lever it out of the hinge.

3. Slowly and carefully work the door out of the hinge by lifting it slightly upwards while gently aligning it at the front.

4. If you encounter resistance, stop and remove the hinge screws instead to avoid damage.

If you are not familiar with the mechanism, removing doors that are set too deep can quickly become problematic.

Note: The hinges are delicate, and uneven forces can damage them, which will then require replacement.

Are there possibly structural differences in the hinges that allow or complicate these installation options?

Kallax shelves with doors usually have uniform types of hinges. Differences only arise when aftermarket doors from third-party manufacturers are used. Ikea uses simple, sturdy pivot hinge mechanisms—no special mounting rails or concealed fasteners.

This simplicity is intentional to make assembly and disassembly easier.
