ᐅ Kallax doors are hitting the floor – what could be the cause?

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Kallax shelf unit from IKEA and plan to add doors to make it look tidier and nicer. However, I noticed that the doors hit the floor when I open or close them. The doors are original and should fit the frame perfectly in terms of dimensions – yet the hinge or the adjustment seems to be off somehow.

My question is: what could be causing the Kallax doors to hit the floor? Is it due to hinge adjustment, uneven flooring, possible warping of the shelf, or maybe the door panels being too long? Has anyone experienced this issue and can share tips on how to fix it neatly without major modifications?

I look forward to your helpful advice!

I would like to add some structured tips here that often help with this issue:

1. Check the hinge position:
- Open the door and take a close look at the hinge. IKEA Kallax doors usually use clip hinges mounted on the inside.
- There are small screws there that allow you to raise or lower the door. Insert a screwdriver and turning the vertical screw will lift the door.

2. Check the floor:
- Use a spirit level to ensure the floor is completely level.
- If the base panel or the Kallax unit itself is not perfectly level, place slight spacers underneath (felt pads, thin wooden pieces).

3. Check door dimensions:
- Sometimes replacement doors can be slightly larger. Measure the height and compare it with the original doors.

4. Check installation:
- Are all hinges properly and securely installed?
- Were the doors possibly installed with spring clip hinges, which can be adjusted differently?

Conclusion: Most of the time, adjusting the hinge is the solution. Usually, you only need to turn the vertical screw a few millimeters, and the problem is resolved. This also saves you from having to modify the floor or trim the doors.

Hello Fredrik34,

I want to address this topic in more detail because these issues are often underestimated. A door on a Kallax shelf that hits the floor is not only annoying but can also indicate potential long-term damage.

First, some technical details:

Kallax shelves are made from coated wood fiberboard and have a very stable structure, but small deformations can occur—especially if the furniture is not standing completely level or if moisture is involved.

The doors are equipped with so-called "clip-on" hinges, which have several adjustment screws:
- Vertical screw for height adjustment
- Horizontal screw for lateral adjustment
- Depth adjustment screw for flush closing

Step-by-step procedure:

1. Use a spirit level or laser tool to make sure the shelf itself is not rocking. The floor is the base, but the shelf can easily stand unevenly on tiles or wooden floorboards.

2. Carefully turn the vertical adjustment screw on the hinges so that the door moves slightly upward. Make sure the adjustment is even on all hinges.

3. If the door still hits the floor even when raised, check the bottom edge of the door—it may be factory-made slightly too long, or the hinge may not be seated correctly.

4. If you have measured 3 to 5 mm (about 0.1 to 0.2 inches) of clearance, that is already good. Less than 2 mm (about 0.08 inches) can cause unpleasant scraping on the floor.

5. If that doesn’t help, you can consider attaching solid felt or plastic gliders to the bottom of the door. This protects both the floor and the door.

Regarding potential warping: MDF doors can expand slightly with high humidity. A constant indoor humidity of around 50-60% is ideal.

Have you ever re-leveled your Kallax shelf or adjusted the doors on multiple hinges? What type of flooring do you have—parquet, tile, or laminate?

That could help in finding a more targeted solution.

Additionally, I would like to point out the following:

The impact of floor height is often underestimated. Especially with uneven surfaces like plank flooring or tiles, it is advisable to level the shelf using small shims (for example, felt pads or thin wooden strips) to prevent the doors from scraping the floor.

Also, check that all hinges are securely and properly installed, as loose hinges can cause the door to sag, leading to it catching or sticking.

For a consistently optimal result, adjusting the hinges vertically, as mentioned before, can help. Also, verify that the door is properly aligned and not twisted due to incorrect installation.

Thank you for the detailed advice. My floor is laminate and completely level. I would say the shelf is stable and doesn’t wobble.

I haven’t adjusted the hinges yet because I wasn’t sure if you can actually “turn them up.” Your posts have encouraged me to give it a try.

Is there a general rule of thumb for how much to turn the screw to raise the doors by just a few millimeters? I don’t want to cause any damage. Thanks again for all the valuable tips!
