Hello everyone,

I noticed that the doors on my IKEA Kallax shelving unit do not align evenly—one side is about 1 cm (0.4 inches) higher than the other. My question is whether it is possible to adjust the doors to make them flush again?

I am using the standard Kallax doors and have already tried adjusting the screws on the hinges. However, the difference seems to come from the component itself or possibly incorrect installation, since the height difference remains despite adjusting the screws.

Are there any special tips or additional parts that can reliably correct a door that is higher on one side? Or is it better to replace the doors completely in such a case? I would prefer to avoid major modifications to the shelving unit but would like to achieve a clean appearance.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

In principle, the Kallax doors are designed to allow minimal adjustment. The hinges have adjustment screws that enable vertical and horizontal alignment. However, the adjustment range is limited, usually to just a few millimeters.

If the door is about 1cm (0.4 inches) higher on one side, this could be due to improper installation or a warped door panel. I would recommend loosening all the hinges completely first and then carefully realigning the doors before tightening the screws again.

A reliable adjustment of around one centimeter (0.4 inches) solely through screw adjustments is generally not possible if the component or mounting points themselves are not precisely positioned.

Regarding adjustment of Kallax doors: The doors are designed from the factory to allow fine-tuning through the hinges—but only within the tolerances of the material and installation conditions.

Correcting a height difference of one centimeter (0.4 inches) is rather unusual and usually indicates an installation error or a warped door panel. Kallax hinges typically offer about two to three millimeters (0.08 to 0.12 inches) of adjustment range, which should be enough to compensate for minor irregularities, but not for whole centimeters.

The following steps may help:

1. Check if the shelving unit itself is level (using a spirit level). A crooked cabinet can cause apparent height differences on the doors.
2. Completely loosen the screws on the cabinet frame and hinges.
3. Align the door by slightly lifting or lowering it, then tighten the hinges in place.
4. If needed, use thin washers between the hinge and frame to correct the height offset at a specific mounting point.
5. If the door panel is warped, replacement is usually the only option.

Additional parts or special adjustment mechanisms are not available as accessories for IKEA Kallax. Adjustment is mainly done manually using small tricks such as adding washers or filing the door hinges.

Hey Camila, great that you brought up this topic here! 🙂

I had exactly the same problem with my Kallax shelf and was able to perfectly align the doors again through some patience and trial and error. What really helped me was completely loosening the screws on the hinges and freeing the door first. Then I manually adjusted the door to the correct height (usually easiest when you lift the door) and tightened the screws back securely.

It’s a bit fiddly, but definitely doable with patience.

I can confirm: a 1cm (0.4 inch) difference can hardly be fixed just by adjusting, but you can set it a little higher 🙂

Fingers crossed it works out for you too! 🙂

Raise the door on the hinge side or loosen the screws, lift the door, then tighten the screws; this usually results in a better fit.

I consider that a plausible explanation. However, I would also consider whether the hinge positions on the back panel of the Kallax shelving unit are exactly aligned. It is known that the mounting holes on IKEA furniture have some tolerance.

My suggestion: Check if all the hinge attachment points are exactly at the same height. If not, the door can hang unevenly – and once the screws are fully tightened, it’s no longer possible to adjust.

This should also be ruled out before making any adjustments, otherwise you just waste time unnecessarily.
