ᐅ Kallax doors develop stains after being wiped with a damp cloth – how can they be cleaned?

yunusliHello everyone,
I have an issue with my Ikea Kallax shelves where the doors quickly develop spots after wiping them with a damp cloth. Especially when they come into contact with a little water or a damp cloth, unattractive water spots or dull marks appear on the surface. I usually use only a slightly damp microfiber cloth without any cleaning agents to remove dust and dirt. The Kallax doors are painted and seem fairly resistant at first, but I find it confusing that they look spotted after drying.
Has anyone experienced this and knows the best way to clean Kallax doors without leaving spots? Are there specific products that help prevent water marks or other recommended approaches? I want to avoid using harsh chemicals that might damage the finish. I would appreciate any tips, including care methods or alternative cleaning techniques. Thanks!

Hello!
Ah, those classic Kallax doors and their stains – I know them all too well! :-) My tip: Instead of using plain water, try a mixture of lukewarm water and a few drops of dish soap. This works better to break down dirt, especially greasy residues. Afterwards, wipe down with a dry, soft cloth to avoid leaving water spots.
Sometimes, water quality plays a role: hard water often causes stains. If that’s the case for you, adding a little vinegar to the water (but not too much, or it will smell) or simply using distilled water can help.
Don’t use too much moisture – Kallax doors prefer to stay dry, as the surface can absorb water and cause those unpleasant stains. Hope this helps you! 🙂

Therefore, I recommend using very little moisture when cleaning. In my experience, it is helpful to use a special furniture care or polishing cloth that is antibacterial and provides light protection to the surface.
Additionally, a cleaning product with a mild conditioning effect is useful, such as a gentle plastic cleaner or a wood furniture care product suitable for painted surfaces.
It is important not to use any abrasive materials or harsh cleaners (alcohol, solvents), as these can damage the surface.

May I quickly ask a few questions to better understand the situation?
1. Are your Kallax doors finished with a matte or glossy coating? This can be important because matte surfaces often react more sensitively to water.
2. How exactly do you dry the surface after wiping? Do the doors air-dry or do you wipe them again afterward?
3. What do you use for wiping – only plain water or microfiber cloths with a cleaning agent?
4. How often do you actually dampen the doors?
The appearance of spots after damp wiping suggests the cleaning method might not be optimal. It could be a water mark issue, where minerals remain behind or the surface is slightly roughened.
As a step-by-step suggestion:
- First, vacuum or sweep dry to avoid dust
- Use a lightly dampened microfiber cloth without any additives
- Wipe immediately afterward with a dry, soft cloth to remove water residues
- Optionally, apply a suitable furniture care product that seals and protects the surface.
Could you please provide a few more details? This will help give more precise advice.

May I briefly interrupt and ask a few questions to better understand the situation?Thank you for your questions!
1. The doors have a matte finish, not high gloss.
2. Currently, I usually let the doors air dry; I don’t systematically wipe them dry right away.
3. I use a slightly damp microfiber cloth, without any cleaning agents. Sometimes it’s just moistened by hand with water.
4. I wipe the doors damp about once a week to remove dust.
I will try wiping them dry immediately after cleaning. I also suspect that the stains are caused by mineral deposits in the water.
One more question: Do you have any experience with suitable furniture care products that can be applied to Kallax doors to better protect them and permanently prevent such stains? Thanks!
