I have a question regarding IKEA KALLAX shelves and their doors: I am planning to upgrade some KALLAX shelves at home with doors from a different system to achieve a consistent design despite using furniture from various series. My question is: Do doors from other furniture systems (e.g., BESTÅ, Ivar, or Platsa) fit mechanically and dimensionally on KALLAX shelves, or are there significant differences to consider? Are there specific dimensions or mounting solutions that apply exclusively to KALLAX doors and are not compatible with other systems? It would be very helpful if someone could share their experience or provide technical details about these doors. Thanks in advance!

The doors for IKEA KALLAX are not directly compatible with other systems like BESTÅ or IVAR due to their unique attachment method and the thickness of the shelves. KALLAX doors typically measure 33.5 cm (13 inches) in height per compartment and are designed for KALLAX units with 38 x 38 cm (15 x 15 inches) square compartments. BESTÅ and PLATSA, on the other hand, have different depths and door dimensions. Additionally, KALLAX doors are attached to the shelves using small screws with protective strips, whereas other systems often use hinges that are integrated into either the door or the frame. A direct swap without modifications is therefore unlikely. If you want to use doors from other series, milling, additional mounting holes, or even new hinges are usually required. It is important to check the exact dimensions of the cabinet as well as the door thickness; otherwise, the fit will not be exact.

The issue with the fittings is crucial, and I can clarify this from personal experience: KALLAX doors are specifically designed to be mounted directly onto the shelf unit using zinc die-cast fittings, which require a relatively shallow depth and narrow profile. The hinges sit flush with the inner edge of the KALLAX shelf frame. Other systems, like BESTÅ or PLATSA, often have deeper shelves and therefore different types of hinges that are recessed into the shelf unit. This means that even if the door widths are similar, door thickness and modifications on the back must be adjusted.

Additionally, KALLAX has a standard opening height of 33.5 cm (13 inches) per compartment, while other systems allow more flexibility with larger or smaller doors; this can result in gaps that do not look neat. When I tried to fit doors from the PLATSA system onto a KALLAX unit, the hinges were either too large or did not sit flush, so milling was necessary.

Do you already have exact measurements for the doors you want to use? How deep is your KALLAX shelf unit? The more detailed the measurements, the better one can assess possible compatibility or needed modifications. Also important: Are you planning to use handles or handleless doors? This affects the door depth and the required fitting technique.

This is a very good point. I would like to add that the fitting technology makes a big difference: KALLAX uses a simple screw mounting through the side wood strips, which often is not compatible with the standard hinge cups from other systems. It would be a major mistake to just fit doors from other series onto KALLAX units solely because they look similar, without first checking whether they can be properly installed.

Additionally, the surface finishes and materials used are different, which can lead to differences in color or texture. If it’s mainly about appearance, I would recommend buying KALLAX-specific doors either from the IKEA store or third-party suppliers that are explicitly designed for KALLAX.

It’s great that you’re paying such close attention to the details here! 🙂

I had the exact same question and tried experimenting myself! The most important thing I can say: doors from other systems don’t fit “out of the box” on KALLAX, but with simple adjustments like removing and repositioning hinges or drilling new holes, it’s doable!

I used doors from the IVAR system, which have a similar height (just a bit different), and with some extra work (a lot of craftsmanship, but manageable!) it ended up looking really nice.

So, if you’re handy and don’t need a perfect IKEA setup right away, just give it a try and enjoy the process! It might also be worth checking your forum or Etsy for custom-made KALLAX doors—there are often cool, unique solutions. 🙂
