Hello everyone,

I recently bought an IKEA Kallax shelving unit and want to change the color of its doors. My question is: Is it possible to simply repaint the original Kallax doors to customize their color?

I am especially interested in which preparations are important, whether the paint or the door material needs to be sanded beforehand, and which type of paint works best to ensure the new color is durable.

I am also wondering if repainting the doors could cause any adhesion or surface issues, and how this might affect the door’s function, for example, whether the doors might close less smoothly afterward or if the surface could become more prone to scratches.

I would greatly appreciate any tips or personal experiences!

Wow, that sounds like quite an effort, but some great tips! 🙂

Just wanted to mention: I painted my Kallax doors with spray paint. This made the surface look really smooth and even. But be careful: make sure to ventilate well and preferably spray outdoors.

So, repainting works really well, just prepare properly and apply the paint carefully, and it will turn out great!

Yes, sanding is definitely necessary.

Acrylic or alkyd-based paint, for interior use.

issues with adhesion or surface quality

Yes, without a primer the paint usually peels off.

The tip about spray paint is useful, especially for smooth surfaces. However, it’s important to pay attention to the quality to ensure good coverage and durability.

Sometimes a combination of primer, paint, and a protective finish, such as clear acrylic lacquer, is advisable. This enhances resistance and longevity.

Thank you very much for all the helpful answers!

You have given me a great overview of how to proceed. I will carefully sand the doors first and then prime them with an adhesion-promoting primer. After that, I plan to use a water-based acrylic paint.

I will also take another look at spray paint; it sounds interesting, but due to the fumes, I will probably have to do that outside.

One last question: Are there any special tips for sanding paper or grit that are ideal for Kallax doors? I don’t have a clear plan yet and want to avoid damaging anything.
