ᐅ Kallax doors are coming off their tracks – is repair possible?

MarmauHello everyone,
I’ve noticed that the doors of my IKEA Kallax shelving unit tend to come off their tracks after some time. The rails no longer seem to hold the doors securely, which makes opening and closing increasingly difficult. This issue is especially noticeable with the upper tracks, where the doors often don’t latch properly and therefore become misaligned or rattle.
Has anyone experienced similar problems? Is it possible to repair the rails or the doors themselves without having to replace the entire system? Any tips on suitable spare parts or DIY solutions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Marmau, your issue with the Kallax doors sounds like typical wear on the running and guide rails. Often, the cause is slightly worn or loosened plastic guides or metal rails inside.
The first important step is to check whether the rails are still straight and undamaged. Sometimes, simply tightening the screws or adjusting the rails slightly is enough. However, if the doors are actually coming off the track, it could also be due to cracked or broken plastic parts, which can usually be replaced. Spare parts are often available directly from IKEA or through furniture accessory suppliers.
A repair is generally possible but requires some patience and careful handling. It is also important to know the exact type of rail – some Kallax models use different systems depending on the year of manufacture. Could you tell us whether these are sliding doors or cabinet doors with hinges? And have you already removed or at least closely inspected the guide rails?
If you can provide more details, that would be great. Then I can offer advice on removal, cleaning, and possible repair steps.

Could you clarify whether these are sliding doors or hinged cabinet doors? These are sliding doors with top and bottom tracks. The tracks still look intact from the outside, but the top guide seems to have too much play, causing the doors to tilt slightly when moved with a gentle pull.
I haven’t tried removing the tracks yet, as I’m not sure how easy that is or whether it might cause damage. The doors aren’t very heavy, but apparently, the tracks are no longer durable enough.
Is there a guide for this kind of repair, or is it too risky?

What you can do:
1. Carefully lift the doors out of the tracks without damaging the rollers (this often works by slightly lifting and gently rocking them sideways).
2. Clean the tracks – remove dust and small particles, and also check the inside of the rollers.
3. Check if the rollers themselves are damaged or bent – replace them individually if necessary, which is often possible.
4. Check that the tracks are firmly fixed at their mounting points and tighten any screws.
Official repair instructions directly from IKEA are rare, but there are various videos and forum posts available. If you don’t feel confident, don’t worry – disassembly is generally not complicated, but it does require some care.
If you have the exact model number of your Kallax, I can gladly send you links to suitable replacement rollers or tracks.

If the doors jam or become misaligned, it can also be caused by a misadjustment of the screws on the rail, which is often overlooked. You should check this before buying expensive replacement parts.
Sometimes it is enough to slightly remove the rails, carefully smooth them with fine sandpaper, and oil the rollers – this reduces friction and minimizes play. It is important not to leave oily residues on the door track, as that can make the doors hold even worse.
In summary: Repair is definitely possible without much effort. For me, the focus is always first on adjustment, cleaning, and lubrication.
